Windows all the way up help a lot, but.....
Windows up an inch or two also helps.
I can't see owning anything but a convertible.

Up to LEGAL freeway speeds, I can hold a conversation or listen to the stereo without a problem. Since I NEVER exceed the legal speed limits I cannot tell you about what it's like at that threshold.
You can carry on a conversation with the top down at hwy speeds no problem. You can also listen to the stereo but your gonna have to crank it up. Having and enjoying a convertible has nothing to do with talking to anyone in the car, believe me when your cruising on the hwy your not gonna talk much to anybody, your gonna be enjoying the ride. Wait till you get home if you want to have a conversation.
Convertible was a prerequisite for me when I purchased mine last year. Conversation and music are a couple notches down on the list. I am putting in a new audio system this summer so I'm hoping that I will be able to hear it better than the stock system.

Depends on what the highway speed is, in my state it is 75 mph and I don't have a problem with the radio or conversing; just have to raise the volume and talk a little louder.
wouldn't own anything but a convertible given a choice (my 78 it wasn't even an option, lol). if you are using the stock radio, it has a feature that raises the volume correspondingly with the speed. does it completely solve the problem, not on your life. does it help you hear the radio, absolutely. if you choose, you can add a vettenet and raise the windows if you want the open air feeling and still want to reduce the back draft and the wind buffeting. all of that goes with owning a convertible, big or small to some extent. if its really a big problem for you, stick with a cpe and just leave the panels in place for those highway rides when the radio and conversation is that important to you.

A conversation is doable, just don't have one with a low talker.

heck np with my new audio system installed the car next to me can hear the radio, they can't hear me talk but they can sometimes read the sign language
That's one of the things I love about my C5 convertible is that when the wife and I are driving with the top down, I can barely hear her!
If you want to listen to the stock stereo, you need to turn it up, however the rear speakers in the C5 convertible are there in name only as you can barely hear them. Better to install some good aftermarket door speakers with a bass subwoofer in the trunk. Perhaps add some tweeters in the door or window pillar.
No problem hearing each other or the radio at 80 mph and my car is not quiet. Windows stay DOWN, except if she's making a cell phone call.I must admit, however, I did make my own wind deflector.
