Forgive me if I'm teaching Granny to suck eggs.
A lot of people never use the reset function on the DIC gas mileage so the figure becomes almost irrelevant.
What is the 18 mpg? Is it an average over a few trips of combined highway/around town? If so its not to far out. I have a stock A4, 3.15 back end with 18/19s and Toyos and I get about 20 mpg average. Best I've ever seen was 31 mpg (short stint stuck in moving traffic at 40 mph) and I can get 25-28 on the way to a car show at 50 mph.
Try hitting reset when you're on the freeway next time. You'll get best gas mileage at about 50 mph. Run it over about 10 to 20 miles and you'll get a decent check of what the cars capable of giving. When you get back in town the figure will quickly adjust to a reasonable around town figure. After a few trips the average doesn't shift much unless you're heavy footed.
I take a lot more interest in gas mileage than most as my gas is rapidly approaching $10 a gallon and my last fill up cost £76.25 ($125).
