you did the best you could with what you had.
I looked all over for 9/16-18 bolts and finally found a few at a local industrial hardware store. I need to have their heads removed so I can usd them as arbors.
I had to go to a bolt store to get some, the stores name is York Bolt and it was the only place I could find them. They have really good prices compared to home depot or Lowes too but you have to spend 5$ each time you go.

I didn't bother with HD. I assumed they wouldn't have what I needed, especially the tap.
Yea thats why I just went ahead and ordered it online, I sure am getting kinda anxious to put it on though. Just kinda tired of the golf ball.
Don't blame you. I think you will like the 8-ball better.
Just finished gluing up some maple, with a dark gash/grain area in it. Sure hope I positioned it in the right spot!
My fellow retiree, you are dating yourself!! I bet you used shellac in wood shop!! shellac has it's place as a stain killer and grain enhancer. Biggest nemesis of shellac is moisture, hence use of it on a moisture rich area like a gearshift would be a bad application tho it would be beautifull!
They have outside applications I've used on picnic tables that was fine and the weathger didn't bother them.

Haven't seen them.About 25 years ago, a NJ Coatings company had a shellac based floor finish that one added a few ounces of catalyst to right before use. It was great. Had that shellac/alcohol smell instead of the stick of poly or varnish and was ready for the second coat in 45 minutes. Wore like iron too. Only trouble was one needed to use it all up or the leftover would get hard in the can. It was taken off the market after all the VO2 stuff came around.
An alternative holding method would be to turn up a "cup" chuck on a faceplate. You could even turn an additional outside "ring" that could be screwed to the chuck to apply pressure from the drilling side.
It's not a "cup" chuck but I made one of a similar concept for holding bowls on the lathe so I could flip them and finish the bottoms.

Nice work on the shift ****!
Thanks! Sometimes I think that if all woodworkers could get together we could have an entire industry selling our own 'gizmos' and workarounds!!

if you use the auto adapter ($50) the **** itself doesn't need a push button.....go for it.

it's true, but a little complicated and not worth the trouble to keep the thumb press button...there is a shaft and spring that the thumb presses to shift gears. The adapter simulates the mechanism and the difference is the driver pushes the whole gear shift down with his palm. So, the **** is attached to the adapter in the same manner as a 6 speed. Thus, way simpler to just tap out the wooden **** like chasboy did.

Here's my second one. Maple laminated with dowels running thru it. A number of people asked for black stain, but I couldn't bear it after polishing it with 2500 paper. I did make it with an offset, resulting in more 'grip area' in the front, and it is bigger than the rosewood. Next one will be black. Promise!
