Im not sure if you can tell from that video but I tend to shift pretty aggressively when I have a little fun.
You don't seem like an abuser to me!
Anyway, with a hard material, IMO, you have a greater chance of the **** moving. The wood threads tend to bind and 'self lock' once I get the **** screwed all the way down. I haven't had one move yet, even the cedar one which is pretty soft. If I EVER decide to use just one (not likely). I would rtv it too. If I ever stop by that delrin ball place, I'll have a better idea for securing it. I know if I made a 'hard bar' of aluminum I wouldn't trust just the threads.
oops! Remember one other thing, my threads go at least 2 1/2" deep into the ****.
Almost done with the cherry one now. Tough wood, and so hard it barely takes a stain.

Yea I guess that makes sense with the density of the material on the reason it is not staying on for me. I am actually thinking about getting some Jb weld and seeing if that will keep it from un-screwing ...I also cut about half an inch off of my short throw shifter so it would would sit lower.

Matt, which **** you using now? I saw the golf ball in your album, but I thought you ditched that one.
I found that the longer **** with a very deep thread allows me to 'short shift' a bit.

Yea I ditched that one, I actually kinda liked the feel of it if only it didnt spin. I made a shifter out of an eight ball that my sister got me, I think I posted a picture of it earlier but idk. Anyways here it is again.

Wood **** reminds me of the Carrera GT and 917, except those are spherical.

I'd love to see pix of them. As I experiment with shapes, I find myself leaning more towards the 'bar' style. I like the variety of shift positions, the extra length is good at times for lower effort, yet the lower grip position is great for shorter shifts. I can't wait to try the next one which should be done later today.

Great work chasboy. It's nice to see someone with a passion for wood bring it together with their passion for Vettes.

I too love woodworking, but am more into cabinetry. I owned a lathe many years ago but decided to sell it after a spindle I was turning for my daughter's cradle went flying across the shop just missing me.

Oh, just ignore the negative comments and keep the pics coming.

Thanks!! Those flying spindles certainly make sure one is awake! My only problem is when I'm 90% finished with the rough shape and want to switch to a shearing cut with the skew chisel and have the angle slightly off and end up with a gouge in the work. Then it's back to reshaping!!

Hi guys. Here's a link to all my shift ***** I've made. I forgot to take pix of the newest one. It was laminated cherry, but I learned that Gorilla glue is not one to use for wood turning. As I started to drill the pilot hole for the threads, the 2 halves separated. Pix to come.

The above link still applies to the gallery of shift *****. Here is the latest, in ebony stained mahogany and the deepest recess yet. One more 'experimental' to make, of oak.

[QUOTE=chasboy;1580424490][B]The above link still applies to the gallery of shift *****. Here is the latest, in ebony stained mahogany and the deepest recess yet. One more 'experimental' to make, of oak.

Mahogany **** in the previous post best shape for shifting yet. (to me). Oak **** is done and in the car. Don't like the shape as much but the heft of the oak absorbs some vibration and shifting is easier. All of the "deep recess" ***** in the pix have given an impression of a short shifter since there is a lot to grip lower down the shaft providing a bit more leverage. I'm sure the measurable difference is minute, but it feels better.
For those of you fellow wood butchers and/or machine users, the results of these experiments are as follows:
Walnut, mahogany, cedar lightweight, machinable, comfortable temperature wise.
Maple, oak, rosewood have good weight to them, helping shift effort. Rosewood and oak polish up great and smooooth. I could tell you more about the cherry but it blew up just drilling a pilot hole. Gorilla glue not good for turning!! Next one will be cherry in a similar shape to the mahogany one.
Thanks for looking!

I thought so, if you ever get a short throw you will really be able to tell a difference with a heavier ****. Id suggest getting one if you want something with a little shorter throw especially if you like the feel it gives when you adjust your grip lower. A short throw cant really be compared to the factory no matter how low you grab it though.

which one do you have? I put the question to my local club. I was strongly discouraged by a number of knowledgeable people about getting one. They said it was more for race applications.

I think mine is an ebay one... I got it through the pay it forward thread thinking it was a stock shifter that I was going to cut down a couple inches, I want to eventually get a MGW as Ive heard really good things about it but my cheap one is serving me well for now. I actually cut it down so that the ball would sit a little lower on it, I dont think its all that difficult to shift but just about everyone who gets in my car does. I guess Ive just gotten used to it.

Sure seems like it. I've been able to drill the lower section wide enough (I have a 3/4 twist drill) that I can make a **** with a very long shaft mimicking the effect of cutting the shaft. I've read a lot about C6 shifters being a good mod.
