Default The "New GM" Really?

I recently took my car into a local GM dealership to get the fuel tank senders replaced, tired of the gauge going all over the place all the time, no matter what crap I put in the tank.
Car is still under warranty, so getting it done isn't a big deal you say?
Guess again!
Three weeks ago they took four days to "Diagnose" what I already told them, to change the senders.
No problem, I'm patient, I take the car back home while the parts are being ordered in, the following week I drop it off to get it done, now things start to go really bad.
After dismantling the car, I get into a pissing contest with the service guy over replacing both senders, eventually he gives up and agrees, after all it just makes sense if the car is going to be that far apart, right?
Sorry, going to be a further delay while we order in a plug that was broken that we didn't see during disassembly, another four days.
Ok, has to be done, no biggie.
Now two weeks later they still have the car, and I just got told today, they have to drop the tanks out again, because "Something is wrong", and the car won't start, funny, I drove it in there!
In total, they have had the car 18 days and I'm not getting it back until this Friday, so that will make 20.
If it weren't for the warranty, I would have never taken it in to the dealer, nothing has changed at these dealers, the "New GM" is just another car sales bull story.
I've bought almost nothing but GM in my 40 years of driving, and this is my last.
Good job GM, and even better to the dealer, what garbage!
Thank you my forum friends for letting me rant & ramble, as frustrated as I am!
And before anyone asks, the dealer name isn't getting revealed until I get my car back!(Hopefully reassembled!)

It may be "The New GM", but it's the same old dealers.

I am sorry to hear about all the troubles you had. I would like to think it is the particular dealership you went to. When I had both my fuel sending assemblies replaced, they did it no problem and the car was ready the next day.

This was my expectation, that they would have the car two days tops, this has turned into a giant Cluster F$%K!
And it is absolutely the Dealership at issue here, but this is also GM's public face, very frustrating.
The saga continues!
The only up side is I bitched so bad they switched up my courtesy car to a brand new Buick, pretty nice but not my Vette!
Thanks

I have a feeling that this type of thing happens at every shop-not just dealerships. A local shop had my Mazda for 2 weeks and avoided commiting to a finish time, every time I called. The car was fixed, though and I've never had anything like that happen again at the same shop, so I continue to go there, occasionally.
My dealership has always provided nothing but great service.

Wow!

Guess I was lucky. I had both senders done to my 98. Took it in at 7:30am and picked it up at 4:30pm. But, of course it was out of warranty and I had to pay for it.

This, I think is the number one reason for all the foot dragging, guess they forgot about about the money they got for the warranty in the first place!

Haa!! Haa!! Thanks I needed this, and I already have my sights set on a 427R Mustang for my next ride, but I do like my Vette, so will still be keeping it, just going elsewhere for service, and no more new cars from the General, my current DD Pontiac GP is a great car, too bad GM messed that up too, dropping one of their best sellers!

Had both mine replaced on my GMPP Extended Warranty two years ago just before my final extension ran out. Took the car in at 10:00am and they had it ready by 4:00pm the same day (I dropped by a couple times during the process to see what they were doing).

If it makes you feel any better, with the crappy gas, the new ones did not last but a few months. They still work, but they are not accurate.

support has always been my #1 complaint with gm products. gm seems to have this mentality of sell it, make profit, market it, forget about it. and it's really sad. you take a car company like acura and they support cars they made way back in 1992 and will continue support on any enthusiast car or popular item as long as need be. they build life long customers by doing this. i've always felt that this was the missing piece with gm. the c5 is not an "old car" and should not be treated as such. cars that still fetch 15-20k aren't "obsolete"

gm just has no real direct competition with the corvette and it kind of is what it is.

I recall it took GM several years after all the imports to raise their warranty from the 36 month 36k miles one they had forever. I think they want you to buy another car before they will fix anything correctly on the one you have. They are still stuck in the 50's mentality where you were supposed to buy a new car every couple of years. The only problem is that they were built better back then.

The new GM stops at the pockets of the CEO and board of directors Id wager. Sounds like you just have the same crappy dealer that you would have had pre bail out.

I worked in a GM dealer back in the 70s. Seemed they would spend more time talking their way out of the job than just fixing the darn thing. Sounds like nothing has changed.

Sorry to hear about that, but I think sometimes it's just a particular dealership crew, that screws around. In 2007 I drove from Mississippi to Northern California, blew out my rear end, brought it to a Chevy dealership there under GMPP, I believe the adjuster told the service manager, Richie, to change the gears, Richie ended up with the whole "new carrier assembly,” with no input from me, turn around, I believe was 3 days.

Good job Richie!!! Richie is at Abel Chevrolet, in Rio Vista now.

Sometimes it's where you bring your Corvette. Good luck to you…

Just to be clear, GM does not own the dealerships. However a bad dealership reflects on GM because the dealership is the face that people see and interact with.

If you still have your owner's manual, there is a section in the book that tells you how to communicate directly to a GM call center if you cannot get satisfaction with the dealership. They may or may not be as helpful with the extended warranties. I don't have experience there.

Last year, my friend had a collegue that was having trouble with her 2009 Malibu. It was in the shop multiple times for the same issue with no resolve. I told her to follow the directions in the owner's manual and she is now driving a 2011 Malibu. After investigation, GM bought her old car and negotiated a new top-of-the-line model for the same payment of her old base model car.

My advice is to change dealerships at a minimum and call the 800 number in your owner's manual to lodge a complaint.

Lastly, I do work for GM and I can tell you first hand that it isn't the same place it was before the bankruptcy.
