I work at an elementary school and we had a lock-down drill just a few weeks ago.
The principal announces the lock-down, which begins the procedures. Every classroom locks their doors and closes the blinds. The kids all huddle against the inside wall with the teacher. We are told that under no circumstances are we to open the door for anybody, no matter who they claim they are.
Then an officer goes down each hallway and turns the handle of the door to see if its locked. The whole process takes about twenty minutes.
The principal then announces the lock-down drill is over and to remain in protected position until an officer comes and unlocks your door.
For this particular drill, I was in a First Grade classroom. Guess how easy it is to keep 21 six-year-olds quiet for 20 minutes.

This is very sad indeed. But, unfortunately, this is our world. Some of you may have read the thread where a fellow CF member was jumped by thugs over a parking misadventure. But the real point that I am bring this up for in this thread is that he was carrying not one but two handguns for protection. Really?? Paranoia or ?? People get crazy over toy pistols or rifles for kids when the real problem source may be the unbelievably bloody video games that kids of all ages play today for hours on end. Where does it stop?
This is very hard to take but imagine what the families are going thru right now and as a Father of a wonderful Daughter I dont know what I would do if this happened to me it would be hard to go on. My thoughts and prayers are with all the families and the children and adults who lost their lives.

Hear, hear, ladies and gentlemen. My school has Kindergarteners, First and Second graders who somehow find violent video games in our computer lab - even through the school's system-wide firewall. Ya can't catch everything.

So so sad. Tragically, these sort of things willl never come to an end as there are always unbalanced people and unfortunately, they will have access to weapons. And while we have a need to know about these things, 5000 news channels continuously spout about these situations for days, sometimes weeks, which sensationalizes the tragic event. And that, in my humble opinion, leads to further similar events because the unbalanced people watched and saw how much it was talked about...they visualize themselves being talked about in the same way. So sad. Is there a solution? Probably not. If you take away guns, then the criminals will still have guns, the police will have guns, but no one else. If someone in the office at that school had been armed, could this possibly have been avoided? Not sure. Maybe the solution is locked doors during school hours. But my heart weeps for those who lost their loved ones. Please pray for them and for the rest of us.
I can't imagine what would go through someone's mind that would cause them to do such a horrific thing. My heart goes out to the parents of the victims.
I have a 27 year old son that I called last night just to tell him that his father loves him very much...
This I believe is the 7th incident this year and in my mind the most horific in terms of the young lives taken. I know this is an OT topic and may get locked but honestly, I think we need to look at ourselves as a society and have a discussion regarding the Second Amendment. I can't believe the Framers would have had any concept that firearms would be used in this manner or the advances in weaponery would have these types of arms in the general public. The loss of these innocent lives is devistating as well as those from the previous shootings. I will be interested in how our leaders come together to discuss and hopefully move forward with some form of action.
