where on a new c5 LS1 crate engine is the code that tells what it is, i.e. ls1, zo6 etc. also what type is it, paper, stamped etc. that tells what engine you have. thanks.

Can't speak for all LS6's...but mine has a bright red sticker on the Throttle Body that says LS6...and most seem to have that.

I've heard from multiple sources that late-model LS1's (01+, or maybe 02+) use the LS6 block. If that's true, I'm guessing new LS1 crate engines also use the LS6 block. So basically it comes down to what heads/cam are installed. Look at the front corner of the cylinder heads. If '241' is stamped there, then they're LS1 heads; if '243' is stamped, then they're LS6 heads.

They seem to be called LS1s but are really LS6 blocks.

Check the heads and see what is stamped on the right front side of the head.
