Pfadt C5 Header Status?
Furthermore, we investigated shorter designs but could not produce any significant power gains. Basically, the only thing they accomplished were cool looks and a slightly different sound. To get the big power that we've been seeing on the these ls motors they needed to be tuned for performance in mind.
Can I assume that the C5 version will work fine for those that have a LS7 in their C5?
Without that, I probably would have gone the typical hot rod route, put on some headers, and gotten no results.
While it is nice to have a well engineered car, it takes a little more understanding to better the original designs than the old days. Cool with me, I can always go modern style and only hot rod the radio.
The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
The cheapest long tube headers might give you 10 rwhp/rwtq less than the best versions... In fact, on the LS1GTO forum i believe it was Maryland Speed that did a longtube header shootout between the best of the best KOOKs signature series with tuned primaries, regular, and the cheapo pacesetter headers.. They did make more power no doubt, but on a mod that only makes ~ 30 rwhp, there just is only so much room for improvement in the power they make...
However, what separates the big money from the cheapos is usually in other places...
1) Materials and Coating Selection
2) Fit and Finish
In regards to 1, you can have the most bad *** header on the planet, but if your using a plain mild steel, or a cheapo ceramic coating or worse paint that flakes off in less than a year, what have you gotten yourself into, other than a rusting piece of crap, that you end up replacing later..
In regards to 2, and i think this is often the BIGGEST difference between the cheapest and the most expensive headers, is fit and finish.. In regards to finish, welds should be perfect, and look like they were done by an artist, no slag, no pin hole leaks, no welds that look like you pumped wire at it with the spool gun until the cows come home, or heat affected zones that are so close to fracture that as soon as you fire up the engine the weld is going to crack...
Fit, this is another biggie in my opinion. how many threads do people see on a daily basis saying, they had to half disassemble this or that, bang on this with a hammer, bend that, or cut this... Even among the top tier header brands you fairly consistently hear x-brand has this install problem, y-brand has that one during install...
The truth of the matter is, once you are dealing with the top three or four long tube manufacturers, the difference in power is going to be a very narrow amount, if any.. SO the difference has to show itself in other areas of manufacture.
Materials Selection, Coating Quality, and better fitment...
No matter how much time a person spends tuning and adjusting primaries, collectors, etc. at a certain point, your squeezing blood from a turnip...
