Default My Clutch Flush Solution

There are two trips in this: one to Auto Zone and one to Wallyworld (OK, Walmart for the uninitiated.)

At Auto Zone, you'll pick up the following tubing:

At Walmart, you'll get the following:

The Flavor Injector is made of glass. BE CAREFUL WITH IT. I broke my first one, they are ultra-sensitive to bumps on hard surfaces. Apparently the glass has a lot of stresses around the needle assembly.

The needle screws in, so it is easy to modify. You'll need to cut it at the UPPER opening shown in the photo. Use your favorite method, just be sure that when you're done, it has no rough edges that can snag on the tubing and damage it.

Then it is a matter of pushing the tubing onto the modified needle:

One of the things I do is to first is to pull a little fluid out of the reservoir into the tubing, then run the hose to the bottom where the clutch piston is, and draw more out. I then push and pull some of the fluid back and forth to agitate loose any sludge in the bottom before I pull out enough to fill the flavor injector which holds less than the clutch reservoir. About three rounds of this and I had clear fluid.

BTW - Wear protective gloves to do this. And cover the nearby painted areas of the car - there is always a stray drop of brake fluid looking to get on your paint!

Go figure. It's almost like it was not intended to be used as an automotive tool. Could you be anymore cheap?

Actually, it is pretty cheap. The flavor injector is $5 and the tubing is pretty inexpensive as well. I wasn't sure at first what the material was that the injector was made from. Now that I know it is glass, I'll treat it more gently.

Can you do it better? The injector has a silicon o-ring on the plunger....seems to me they thought of automotive applications.....

And if it breaks, there are almost certainly plastic versions of the same thing around for the same price, maybe less.

Or go to wallyworlds automotive section and pick up the fluid syringe. Or go to tractor supply and pick up a hand full of syringes for injecting cattle. They're huge.

Did you remember to do your exercises and pump the clutch pedal 30 to 40 times between fill ups?

I use a turkey baster to remove the fluid from the reservoir.

I believe the Original poster is using the black 1/8" tubing to go beyond the reservoir ...all the way to the slave cylinder that is where most of the contaminated fluid would be.

Yup - and by using the injector to push and pull fluid around the slave cylinder, it helps dislodge any sludge there. You just have to be a little careful on the push so that you don't splatter the fluid outside the reservoir.

At some point in the process, you can also remove enough fluid so that it is possible to take a paper towel and wipe out the contaminants in the reservoir.

Alas, no Tractor Supply here. Our Wallyworld didn't carry those fluid syringes in the automotive section, I looked multiple times. I even had to wait until "BBQ season" before they put out the Flavor Injectors. They don't seem to understand that in S. FL we grill all year long.....they treat us like we live in Michigan, or something.

Yes, if they tell you on the packaging what the material is.

This is a great idea. Most people on the forum use the Ranger method and only pull fluid from the reservoir, but this pulls the dirt/sludge from the source. It should do a lot better job than just pumping the clutch pedal a lot.

I plan to try it this way too.

Thanks.

What about air in the system? Isn't there a good chance that you will inadvertently introduce air bubbles into the system. What about when it comes time to refill? Maybe I'm missing something?
