I dont come to corvette forum to hear about computers - i get enough of that at work!
Me neither. I do this junk for a living, so I see a gazillion more than you and nearly every one of them that I see has a problem that I have to fix. I just felt this was a serious enough threat that it needed to be put out there. Be aware! Don't open attachments in email. Keep backups. Beam me up Scotty.
Maybe in 1988. Technically, and legally, a Mac is the only computer you can natively run all major OS's. Windows and Mac these days is Coke vs. Pepsi.
Matt, since Apple decided to giveaway the new iOS, your statement might not be true now. Macs are just using same hardware as PCs these days. Who knows, Apple giving away their OS might be the thing that they've needed for a while. Sort of following Google's model.
I been trouble free on my PC for 3 plus years now at 1/3 the cost of a mac. Just saying, PC and having a good AV you will be set.
100%. As I am working for a startup company, I can say without a doubt that we have saved thousands of dollars by buying PCs, which are also much better equipped than Macs that cost twice as much. Windows 8 Security Essentials is actually a very good built-in antivirus and firewall, but even Windows Defender for Win 7 is good. I use Windows 8 Pro at work and Win 7 at home (with Norton 360) and have not had any issues for 6 years.
I actually prefer Windows 8 over Win 7. All it takes is 10 minutes of training and the improvements and shortcuts that Win 8 offers are readily apparent.
But yes, be cautious with email attachments, no matter what your operating system, make sure your antivirus/firewall is turned on and functional and you'll be fine.
I cannot get it to load. It won't pass my anti virus software.
If you can't get the prevention tool to load, either temporarily disable / turn off your AV then install and restart / turn on the AV afterwards. Or.... maybe just click the "Allow" feature on that particular software when it starts to install. Different AV programs will react differently. I had no problem at all with mine.
On the bright side on this fiasco, some of the powers that be (unknown who exactly at this time, maybe the Feds, maybe security firms round table, etc) are creating a DNS sinkhole for CryptoLock Ransom. While not 100% effective, it will sure put a big dent in the program's ability to "call home" and setup the encryption process. That's how serious this one is/was. A DNS sinkhole can be good or bad but in this case, it's good because its being used to protect the users like us. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DNS_sinkhole
Thanks. Only wanting to watch out for my Corvette brothers and sisters. I had no motive of trying to get anything for myself out of this. I had to work today to remove this exact problem from a retail store, a high-end men's clothing store here in OKC. They lost all documents and pictures but their store point of sale program was ok and that was the main thing. They also have backup of their pics as they're all done by a professional photographer and he has copies as well offsite. All in all, it could have been a lot worse. Just trying to do my small part in helping out because I've been helped out countless times by others here on the forum. I very much appreciate your kind words. Thank you.

Its marketing.
Lion was the last "real" OS release. Mountain Lion was a failed Service Pack. Mavericks is Lion and Mountain Lion done right. Microsoft never charges for SP releases but Apple always tries to sell us on it being "new". Just Apples Koolaid marketing. After 7 years of stirring the Koolaid, I am no longer blinded by the Apple RDF.
I would pay the ransom, and then do a chargeback. LOL
Either way, it's good to have the brains to NEVER open a zip file or any other attachment from anyone you're not expecting one from. And NO businesses will send you an attachment. Especially UPS or FedEx. Businesses don't do that. They ask you to go to a website and log in with an account if you need to download something.
NEVER open attachments from anyone unless you're expecting the attachment!
