Hello,
I just checked with safelite to get my windshield replaced(stone chips, wiper haze, micro chips) it makes it really hard to see out of.
I got a quote approx. $1000 bucks. I knew it was pricey but there is a trim peice that they say I need that is $450 bucks. I am going to put a claim in with insurance but did not know what the trim peice is.

Do any of you?
I doubt if insurance will cover replacement if it is not actually broke. That does sound crazy for a windshield . They are probably giving you a price on a HUD windshield , but even so , that sounds high and I have no idea what the $450. part would be. Better do some more checking.
I asked Portland Glass for quote last fall. They said $268 complete, installed. I specifically asked about any necessary trim pieces, and they said they were included. At that price, I'm not even going to bother my insurance company. Now, this is not a "HUD windshield", which is considerably less expensive. I'll get it in the Spring, if it ever shows up around here.
I'd get another quote if I were you.
Sounds very high even for a Canadian..where everything here is 20-30% higher than you South of the border people. Quoted $700 for HUD windscreen last year. I would hope you catch a rock in the windscreen before going thru insurance otherwise probably not covered. I have the same issue as you but no cracks in screen. Just a matter of time before I replace.
Last May a rock cracked mine in front of the Hud unit. The quote from Safelite was $1100 installed for a Hud windshield. $450 was for the trim.
I called Novus for a on site quote. If your trim is in good it can be reused. My installed took 3.5 hrs to replace the windshield. Taking his time uncovering all the screws holding the trim. He could have went faster by not being concerned about damage.
Saved my ins company $450 for the trim kit. The installer makes all the difference.
I replaced my windshield the year before last because there were some small scratches in it. The rubber molding that goes around the top and sides of the windshield was more expensive than the windshield itself.
I called yesterday to get a price for replacing my windshield on my 2000. And a friend of mine owns the glass shop and a pretty honest guy. They quoted me $1088.16 for the windshield . And if they got it from the GM dealer it was $1300.00. The molding that goes around three sides was $700.00. He said sometime they glue it Down but if you're careful sometimes you can get it up without tearing. At that time I decided my windshield is not so bad I can live with it.lol

I had mine done through a glass guy that does a lot of custom hot rod work. I want to say it was around $450. He knows how picky I am and actually looked at several windshields before he found the right one. I also thought he said it was made in the US, but I could be wrong about that.

I have a novel idea. Why don't you ask the people who told you need a trim piece what they are talking about?
To be clear, I very fortunate in that I haven't needed to replace my windshield, BUT - in all the threads I've read about the process, the trim piece needs to be replaced to provide a water tight installation. It is also my understanding that this is part of the instructions for windshield replacement; and from what I've read, those that chose not to replace it or just clean and reuse the existing trim, it resulted in leaks and eventually had to be replaced.
