Default Help please....

So I'm on a road trip in my '03 Vette (42K miles) and started hearing a loud thumping or knock from the drivers side rear. Nothing visibly loose or hitting. It is worse when I left off the accelerator, subsides somewhat when I accelarate again. It definitely sounds like driveline. Changes with speed but is always present when moving. I made it home but it was a tense drive to say the least.

Could this be a bad wheel bearing? CV Joint?

I'd like to troubleshoot this myself rather than take to a dealer. Even if I don't do the repairs, I would at least like to be informed.

Thanks for any help.

Sounds like you have the drive axle going bad and or the rear hub bearing - or both!

Both are an easy fix, not hard to replace - my money is on the CV/Drive Axle!

Is your Vette a A4 or MN6?

Thanks,Matt

A4

I love my Vette but have to say I'm not overly impressed with the engineering design quality. Had to replace both power window motors at 30k, the shifter cable broke at 35k and left me stranded and now bad rear bearings at 42k?

Jack it up and a visable check will probably show something when you move the wheels and axles.

Jack your car up lately? Your mother-in-law would like to get out from under the car.

On the bright side, you won't have to worry about being invited to her house this Christmas.

I feel bad for you but it just sounds like bad luck to me. I now have 98k on mine and so far it has only needed all of the idler bearings replaced. There are more c5's without these kinds of things happening than with.

Sounds exactly like a loose wheel...but you made it home without loosing it. Should have checked immediately incase the wheel nuts were missing. Doesn't sound like it will be a problem diagnosing this problem.
