Depends on what I use the car for. I have an 03 vert that I drive 50KM every day to and from work in traffic. Automatic.
If it were only being driven occassionally for pleasure, manual all the way.
Two factors: (1) it's my only car and (2) I live in SoCal.
That said, there are occasions I wish it had the C6 6-speed auto and paddle shifters.
Never settle lol. I looked at many many C5's before I got mine.
Had to Be/Have:
-A 2003 (I wanted the 50th Emblems)
-6-Speed
-Sport Seats
-Black w/ Black Interior
-HUD
and a few more things probably, I was picky. I wish my Silverado was a 6-Speed but alas these days they are all Autos
When I bought my C4 many years ago, I settled for an automatic despite being set on a manual. Regretted the decision I made until the day I bought my C5 (6 speed). Will not make that mistake again.
As always, YMMV.
Ditto, same here. And that is why I sold my C4. It all worked out in the end.
Just wondering which do you guys think is the favorite. If you were buying a C5, hand the money burning your pocket, found the right car in the right color, right interior and right options for you. It all comes down to the car setting in front of you is a different Tranny than you wanted. Is that a deal killer?
RS
Not a D/B for me. My 1st Vette ( '65 / 365 HP with a heavy clutch) worked for my bride & I just fine. Many years later (45 yrs) an auto works just fine .
I'm split...
I bought my A4 03 Coupe in 2006 because that's what I wanted then. I spent lots of cash over the years on performance mods. Then, in 2012 I decided to "track it". After 1.5 years of adding coolers and the trans still shutting down due to overheating on the track, I dropped the A4 and replaced it with an MN12. I could not be happier now.
I just got back from the Aspen Co and drove a new Equinox with a six speed auto with the shift button on the shifter. Going up and down the mountains you will love the control they give you over the power of the motor. The engine braking was great.
That being said, I never touched it again after we got down to the flat lands on our way back to Texas.
The wording could be better on your poll. You ask is the transmission a deal breaker. The majority picked 6 speed manual. Does that mean that a 6 spd manual is a deal breaker? I think the fanatic "manual only" crowd just naturally picked it because they thought they were voting FOR a manual.
I was flexible on just about everything else. Color, options, miles, etc. The only thing that was a must have was a manual transmission.
x2, I had been looking at corvettes for years, before I finally bought one, the main criteria was that it must be a manual, color was not as important, interior creature comforts and other options did not matter, I found a one owner 99 c5 coupe with mostly stock everything and a 6 speed and made an offer, rest is history, this 6 speed is not as nice to shift as the borg warner t-5 in my firebird, but that's ok, I still have to shift!

Man all I can say is "It was my first time" I also wish I had worded it better, now with that said the information is just what I was looking for.
No animals or children were harmed, beat with a switch, or mutilated in any way in the writing of this post, not even mean ones like Bears, Tigers, Muskrats not even a rattlesnake either.
Its not like the corvette is a high revving car where a manual is actually a lot of fun to drive. long time buddy of mine has HondaS2K which I love to take to 8500-9000 rpm but It doesn't have the torque of the vette V8. The A4 is well suited for the amount of torque the LS1 produces, but there is no right or wrong....if you are trying to justify the available tranny in the car you are looking at, then you have already lost.
Good luck, if its a manual tranny you truly desire and not what the macho guys of the world think you should drive, then just get one.

Wanted an A4 when I went looking. Found one and then made changes to make it fun to drive. Changed out rear gears to 3:42's, Changed transmission to RPM built A4 with a Yank SS3200 converter. Performance tuned.
Guys this is a Hypothetical Question, it is not intended for me or any one in particular. For me personally there is no question, I wouldn't even consider an automatic.
What brought the question on in the first place was I was wondering if I found a good deal on a C5 and bought it because its a deal and wanted to flip it, how important is the tranny? Could I flip a Automatic just as easy as I could a 6 speed? Notice that word "EASY".
I had an acquaintance, not a friend but an acquaintance, who had way over extended himself financially and was wanting to get out of a C5 he had a note on. I have offered to pay off the loan and take the car under the condition I would be able to flip it easily. Thus the reason for this thread.
