Default Idling issue - question

Okay so for the past week I've noticed that my FRC has been dropping the idle down from 700-ish to under 500 when I come to a stop. Almost as if it wants to die out and then comes back.

Once I get going again and come to the next stop it does the same thing over again. This is getting pretty annoying. Should i have it checked out at my local dealership ? ( I have a buddy that works there)

OR is there something I can do to fix this ?

Car has new plugs and wires. I cleaned the K&N filter about 3 months ago.

And ideas ??

Not sure how old your C5 is but mine started that as the fuel pump was dying a slow death. Mine is 2004 with 89K on the clock.

That is definitely not acceptable behavior. Idle should hold steady around 700-750; I'd start checking the fuel system and see if you can find anything that isn't working right.

You also need to check and see if you have any codes popping up when this is happening.

Do you have any codes? Mine was doing this and found moisture in the TAC module wire connections but mine was also throwing codes P1220, P1221 and P1518, would sometimes even die when coming to a stop. Engine would also derate at times.

The "check engine" light just came on today on the way home from work.

I'll assume you know to use the correct cleaner for the TB and MAF...

Good Luck!

Was it running ok before you put the new plugs and wires on, if so, you may want to revisit the plug wires just to make sure they are secured on the plugs. Also, make sure the intake system does not have any leaks where they connect.

The car was and has been running great up until a week or so ago.... I'll check the wires and intake but I'm thinking the maf and tb my be culprits as the other members have suggested.

And thanks a bunch for your input !!

Cleaned the maf yesterday and the tb (without removing it from the intake), drove the car this morning and it still has the same idling issue... thinking about removing the tb from the intake and giving it a complete cleaning.... maybe this will solve the issue.

If you did a decent cleaning of the TB attached; it won't make any difference by removing it. I spray it a couple times with it closed then used a clean rag or paper towel to wipe off any stubborn areas. Then I push the throttle blade open with one hand and spray the backside and the lower TB area again and wipe those areas with a clean rag as well. The lower areas of the blade and housing are what seem to have the most gunk on them. If you clean that area well then you are done. Removing the TB housing will not produce any better results. Have you investigated for vacuum leaks??

Sinister-1, I'm having the exact same issue as you. I've also noticed a voltage drop when it happens, maybe from 13.9 to 13.0v and then it rises quickly. I have had the engine stall though and like you, don't know the cause. I'll be following along for a solution too, thanks for your post..

I was a little hesitant to push open the TB blade. I'll take it back apart in an hour or so and clean into the back side of the TB. No I haven't checked for any vacuum leaks yet.....

I was also considering the possibility of the throttle position sensor going bad.

The car has been dropping to below 400 rpm when I come to a stop at a light and today it finally turned off on me !! This is driving me NUTS !!

I will keep posting my findings as I go for anyone else having this issue. I haven't looked at my volt gauge.... I'll take it for a spin later and check that out as well.

Hows the car running when not at idle. Maybe a plugged fuel filter? Just putting out ideas to try to help.

The car runs great through the gears and even under hard acceleration.
As a matter of fact after I drop the hammer on it, it kind of clears ups for a good 15 minutes or so....
