Finally brought the Z out of hiding today. Took it to a local car wash because it's still really cold here in DC. I was in line behind a Prius complete with the standard Obama-Biden sticker mod, which is pretty much a standard option in DC. Nice looking family; husband, wife, 9 years old boy.
So I go inside and pay and the family is at the glass waiting for their car to come through and I'm standing their with them (because I'm still 9 years old inside myself). Here comes my beautiful black Z06. The boy gets really excited, "WOW DAD LOOK AT THAT CAR WHAT KIND OF CAR IS THAT?!?! IS IT ELECTRIC? It took a nano second for me to feel bad for the lil guy. Clearly growing up in a household where only electric cars are cool and America sucks etc. At any rate, of course his Dad had no clue what kind of car it was so there was silence until I decided to infuse some 'Merica into this young man's life for the first time...
"It's a corvette. It runs on gasoline. Lots of it."
Good for you. ALL kids should know what a Corvette is. And that they use LOTS of gas too.....Would have loved to see his parents faces when you said that.
I had a few friends in high school who were excited by hybrids. Sadly they would rather read about MPG's than experience how fun a proper car can be. Makes me respect my c5z all the more.

Really would have been a great opportunity to teach the kid that a performance car can get really respectable gas mileage while offering a lot of driving fun. And a lot of assumptions made about that family's beliefs. .
Hey, fossil fuel is just solar energy that has been filtered through the food chain and reprocessed into liquid form.
(I always wondered how popular solar energy would be if it was referred to by its more technically-correct name: "thermonuclear". )

gas mileage was not much of a concern to me when I first bought the car or even now in my mod decisions... I could see an electric car being practical for daily commuting if you do a whole lot of driving but on a performance standpoint I would never trade off for electric, even if they were faster... I like my vette to have smelly exhaust, make all kinds of noise, shake at idle from the cam, and run on gas, there is no replacement for that

Electric cars will never be popular with car enthusiasts no matter how fast they are. They are just for getting from point A to point B.

pretty much and from a financial standpoint they are a waste of money... most people nowadays don't keep their cars for more than a few years so the savings you get from gas are being rolled over into your payments because the car cost more... and if you do happen to own one when it goes out of warranty and the battery fails, well you better get your wallet ready

Electric cars are not for me. Maybe in 20 years when they have them perfected and they have a thousand mile range, go 150 mph, fully charge in five minutes and cost 50 cents for the charge.
I like that story and it sounds totally believable to me. I had an incident in a gas station that makes me think so. The woman opposite me is telling the young attendant how her car is so much better because it gets 40 mpg (btw so does my turbo GAS Sonic) and is pointing at me. So I tell him to go tell her my car has about 500 hp and still can get 30 mpg and is a lot more fun than her POS. I've read that pollsters say people buy those things to make a statement, not to get actually get better gas mileage. Plus, has anyone noticed that Prius drivers seem to be some of the worst drivers on the road and are always cutting in and out on the highway driving the fastest.

Sounds phony to me because every 9 year old kid in America knows what a Corvette is.

Yea I made the story up. That's just my thing. Sit at home on a Saturday night and conjure up stories in the hopes of making a bunch of dudes I don't know think my forum persona DBOTHEBOSS is cool. But you got me...back to just being a complete loser. Next time I will think of a story you will believe I swear I will

The story was lame. I hope you can do better next time.

Unfortunately not... that's why so many of us with C5s have gotten used to people asking if the car is new
