My passenger side headlight has a larger gap between the top of the closed light and body than the driver's side. I can fit my index finger inside. Can't do that on the driver's side. Carfax said the car had never been wrecked. I can't send pics now. Could someone post a pic of their hood with both headlights down??
The headlights are both supposed to be flush with the hood and front bumper when closed. Your problem is caused by either missing or worn out little plastic/rubber stops that are on the headlight bucket. The little rubber stops set the travel of the light bucket and if missing allow the light to over travel or recoil because it would have hit metal to metal rather than metal to rubber. Had the same problem on mine. There are 4 rubber stops on each light.
The headlight covers should fit flush with the body. Have you tried to raise and lower the headlights manually (see owner's manual)?
C5's came with plastic gears for the headlights. They are known to wear out and then fail to operate properly. Bronze replacement gears are available from a couple of our vendors and not a big job to install.
