Has anyone tapped into the electrical supply for the mirror lights to feed their detector instead of that fat ugly spiraled cord that comes with them? Or run a separate wire under the windshield molding up there?
If you tapped into the mirror supply, which wires did you use? - it looks like there are 4 of them going into the mirror, and can you remove that plug from the back of the mirror without taking the mirror off? Looks hard to get to.
As a separate question about the mirror - what is that little plug with the slot in it at the bottom of the right side of the mirror for? Is that the interior console flood lamp? I have to check the next time I'm in the car with the lights on.
So many questions, but somebody here knows.
I don't plan on going ridiculously fast but just the pure look of a Vette is enough to draw too many eyes so I reckon it wouldn't hurt to have a little bit of help from a radar detector. Anybody have any brand recommendations? I'd like to avoid spending $100s of dollars.
I had a Bell for 20 years and was great til the volume finally quit. I now have a Cobra. Has all the bells and whistles, even tells you when there's an accident ahead and where to go to avoid it! Tells when ambulance are coming, service vehicles nearby, etc. Has POP radar also. For under $170....couldn't beat it! Works great so far!
I leave TSR and all those extra features off, and enabled band segmentation, so it's as sensitive as possible. But it does give more false alerts than other newer detectors.
But the best way to deal with that is run in spec mode. Then it will show the actual frequency of the radar. Once you know the frequencies in use in your area, it's easy to tell if it's a real alert or not.
I browsed a lot of radar detector forums before getting a Redline. My research indicated it is the most sensitive and best RD for use on the highway. Although the Passport Max and V1 are good RD too.

I think you can tap into the 4 wire mirror, but the power to it is always hot. Not tied to the ignition. When I ordered a blend mount, the mirror tap page says it's not for use with manual dimming mirrors. I don't know why. But I have a manual dimming mirror with 4 power wires, (I think auto dim is 6 wires) so I just hardwired it with the RJ-11 hardtap cord they sell. Here's a good link on installing it. http://frankhunt.com/FRANK/hobbies/c...e_install.html
Took me around 30 minutes. I actually had broke my cigarette lighter receptacle by continuously plugging and unplugging that long spiral cord before I got the blendmount.
