I know where I live a good paint job is about $9000,a great one would be $12,000+ and a $7500 one you'd be taking it in to get a wrap on it.
Sorry for my ignorance but why are good paint jobs that expensive nowadays? It didn't seem like that long ago you could get a nice custom job for 4 or 5 grand. Labor and materials just that much higher?

I was told just materials for a show quality job would easily exceed $3k. Then lots of sanding and blocking at $100+ /hour adds up quick especially with coat after coat.
Platidip, you can do your whole car for about $200 and a couple hours. My buddy did his GT-R in a pearl chameleon that looked amazing. I dipped my wheels over a year ago and they have held up great, too.
<edit> Yes, that is plasti dip shot from a Harbor Freight gun (self contained compressor) that was about $100.
Is that the name of the stuff "Platidip"? Where did he buy the stuff. Is it holding up? A friend has a 30 step 99 Vette but it's not worth a expensive paint job. Maybe, this stuff will work?

if you would have looked at the link that I sent you, you would have seen that he sells Plasti Dip as well as the autoflex.
Anybody know how wraps handle chips or pebble hits? Do they cover chips in warranty or roll of the dice. I was thinking of wrapping mine instead of painting it but my side mirrors have chip marks as well on the hood. Will wraps cover these up?
If you wrap over a chip, you will see it... Either fill the chip or sand it out
After looking at "dipyourcar.com" and their video's, I'm impressed. Down South on the Gulf Coast the sun and salt eat paint. This looks like a cheaper alternative to painting. I'd like to see some more pictures of dipped cars.
Why do you think there are so many cars, and even newer ones, with so much body damage on them these days? Nobody wants to pay outrageous prices for body and paint work. I just had to have some body work and paint done on my wife's new minivan because some idiot damaged the rear left corner while it was parked in a lot. It left a tiny black mark, and a small crease in the left rear qtr panel...it was a $1400 repair! Luckily my insurance paid for all of it except for my deductible...I can see why people don't get the cosmetic stuff repaired...

In my experience a lot of shops won't fire up a paint gun for less than a grand. When I dropped my targa and needed it repaired and sprayed I really had to hunt around. Found an old school hot rod guy who took care of me. Unfortunately I just found out he retired.

They are that expensive because they can be.
All about supply and demand. Not saying that paint and body work is not hard work (it is), but as long as people keep wrecking cars and insurance keeps paying for them, prices will remain high. Painters and body shops make their money off fixing wrecked cars. They are not dependent upon repaint jobs.

Had many shops say they lose money on regular paint jobs and finding a good compromise of quality and price is tough. Dealerships actually arent too bad for that.
All a matter of personal taste and who is doing it
If I was buying id rather see old factory paint than a "one day" paint job or wrap, dips etc. Everyones different though.
Did have a friend who, after prepping his C3 paid a one day place 2k for one of their "better" jobs; month later he colorsanded and buffed it car looked every bit of a 8k job was very very nice and held up for yrs .
Just dont understand why Vettes cost so much to paint unless you take it all apart, theres really not much area to cover
My Silverado only ran $3500 lasted 8 yrs and was better than factory.
You may get a C5 painted for $4K at Macco, but you won't get it done by anyone who is reputable for that...
So very wrong. There's a shop in my town that soecializes in restoring classic muscle cars as well as hoopties and donks and he does great work. A full respray in a different colour for a C5 is $6k. Thats including inside door jams and full panel removal. He told me that if you are paying 10K for a paint job you are paying for some jerks giant ego and getting ripped off. His waiting list is very long unfortunately because his work is so good.

dipyourcar .com or something offers a ton of colors. No telling how long his lasts because he keeps changing his mind and reshooting. It's about $100-$150 per color change if you are just buying color. It takes about 2 hours to do limited masking and shoot it.
I shot my wheels almost 2 years ago and other than a couple quick overshots to touch up, it has held up great. I shot it over the chrome. There was one spot that didn't stick on the rim lo[ between 2 spokes. I cut it out and reshot that spot. Can't really tell unless I show you.
I have wrapped, and rewrapped. Paint is nice, but the cost, combined with the fact then you have to baby the car around worrying about chipping the ****, isn't worth it. I wrap my own cars, so a color change, with perfect finish every time, is a 500.00 bill for me. If you're going to drive it...wrap it. If you're going to garage queen it and baby it, paint it.
KITT, are you a professional wrapper? I’ve dabbled in wrap vinyl for a couple of years now, mostly small things, tho’ I just wrapped my targa because of deterioration of the surface and a couple of small cracks. I’ve thought about doing the whole car for a long time, but been afraid to take the plunge.
My other question is I’ve never seen an material estimate for only $500. Perhaps the ‘size estimators’ I’ve seen on the web are not accurate for a Corvette?
