Thank you
Should have told him you were just calling in his plates to be sure he didn't have any warrants.

Cops: do as I say not as I do.

Still no one should tail gate.

I was on an onramp to a raised freeway with the top down and my redheaded wife in the passenger seat on a Friday afternoon after work. As I merged on the freeway, I noticed a motorcycle officer on the overpass behind me with a radar gun. I pulled over and waited.

My wife was yelling at me as he walked up. He asked how fast I was going. I said, "Maybe 70?" He said, "107 MPH on radar." I said, "I am sorry sir." He asked for license, registration, and insurance.

He went back to his bike and called it in. My wife was still yelling at me. He walked back up, smiled at me, told me to hold it down, and let me go.

My wife asked why he had not given me a ticket since I had admitted 70 MPH. I told her he had felt sorry for me with her yelling at me. That was a long weekend for me.

If I can't see pavement between my car and the one behind, I pull over

More than likely when a cop is following close he is just checking you out. A warning is like winning the jackpot.

I'm pretty sure tailgating someone is a violation. Cop or not no one likes someone riding to close, I'm not saying you were but he felt you were to close.

There is no law in Maine against tailgating. If he really wanted to, the only thing he could write me up for is "driving to endanger"..

Which brings me back to my original point.. that means that They "drive to endanger" all the time. I got pulled over once by an officer who did not see my blinker. I pointed out how hypocritical it was since he had a headlight out... I got pictures of his cruiser with the light out. Judge dropped it. I just didn't like the whole premise of the reason he pulled me over. They need to abide by the same rules that they enforce. Unless their blue lights are on. Until then? in my book? they are just like the rest of us.

Sounds like you have something against cops. They are not like the rest of us. Every time they pull someone over they risk their lives.

I agree with DonsC5. When they are not in an emergency situation (blue lights on), they should be obeying traffic laws like the rest of us. Just because they are in a police vehicle does not give them the right to break the law ***** nilly, they should be held to a higher standard than regular folk IMO.

The devil's advocate in me would respond that in our current state of affairs in this country and the police??? Every time I get pulled over I'm at risk as well...

Having had a similar experience in my DD with a warning that I knew was totally uncalled for since I did not do what he said I did, I put dash cams in all our cars. Now if some yoyo wanta-be-tough cop wants to beat his/her chest and pull me over for something I did not do, I will be polite, but then take the ticket/warning to his boss and show him the video. Cops may have a bad day, but not at my expense.

I was following a cop and was close to him because he was doing 40 in a fifty five and I was going to pass him. He pulled off and once I passed he pulled in behind and on went the the lights. He gave me a ticket for following to close. I was out of town, had a friend who was a lawyer and told him about it, he laughed and said he could get that thrown out in seconds. He said the only way they can prove you were too close is if you hit him ?? It was 300 hundred miles from home, he said he gets 100 dollars an hour so it would cost me 600. I let it go, next thing a month later my insurance goes way up. Called my agent and he said I was in a accident, I said no way and told him of the ticket. He replied the only way you get that ticket is if you hit someone so the insurance listed it as accident ???

"yes Sir" is always the best answer.

Or a dash cam to prove the cop was wrong.

True. Still no excuse for violating the civil rights of those their serve.

LEO aren't the heartless killlers BLM paints them to be yet still many aren't the "professionals" they are trained to be. Cameras catch it now.

Mouthing off isn't smart, it's also not a crime.

Can tell you from experience the main reason you may see them speeding or? is they are a rolling target whenever they are on the road, they get shot at all the time;last place I lived at got shot up from a neighbor, had 3 cars vandalized badly from a neighbor @ current place due to a landlord who gave out information they shouldnt have
People out there are nuts just looking for an excuse.
There are always bad apples but in general no different from anyone else going to work coming home & paying bills;if you think youre being treated unfairly then by all means go file a complaint/grivance, getting mouthy will work to your disadvantage real quick.

If nobody became a police officer the world would be worse off.

My best one was doing 90mph 12am on a highway. Nobody on road. All of sudden a car appears 3 in behind me off bumper. I stayed a 90mph despite urge to floor it. Around 3 minutes late (long time doing 90mph) the car behind me went in right lane and floored it. It was unmarked police car. He Just took off . I of course lifted foot and got back to 55.

Speeding aside, I have seen cops:

Use cellphones while driving.
Flash their lights on to get through a red light, then promptly shut them off once they're on the other side.
Rolling stops through stop signs.

As an enforcer of the law, a cop should be expected to set an example for the general populace.

usually the best way to handle it is just be polite.. somehow ive always gotten more than a fair deal. More warnings than I can count, even blown over the legal BAC limit.. (very slightly over) was with my GF at the time, and had the officer park my truck FOR ME, and let me call a ride home. maybe because I look like im military, and have no points on my license.. idk but im not going to question it!

the ONE time I was smart with a officer I was pulled over for not having a front tag on my infinity I was driving at the time... It was mounted on the side, not the middle of the front bumper..

he said you know in MD its the law to have your front tag mounted? I said yessir, that's why its there. he said excuse me? I said its there, how much do you want to bet? I thought officers were supposed to be observant? in a huff he walked up to the front of the car.. stared, and saw it. came back and said well why is it not mounted in the middle?

I said is it the law that it has to be? its clearly visible. he just replied.. WELL, its supposed to be in the middle...... I said well if its not a law, then its going to stay there, if there is nothing else, youll have to excuse me, im late for work now.

and pulled away.
