Default BATTERY Question

Need a new battery for my 2001 C5. The Plantium AMG
battery from Sears is on its final charge. Doesn't owe me anything as it has been performing well for 9 yrs.
Sears no longer has this battery. What battery should I get to replace it?? Want something that will be able to handle winter storage as well as added Stero equipment?
Thanks
Fred

I also have a Sears Diehard Platinum battery in my C5 and it has been working well for 7+ years. I have heard other forum members recommend an Odyssey Extreme, 34/78 PC-1500DT battery as a replacement for the Diehard Platinum. It's the one I will probably look at when my battery needs replacement.

I also have one....its my second. The first one lasted three years and died but they gave me a free exchange (almost free $5.99). The exchange has been in for several years.

My advise would be to get another AGM battery but look at the RC numbers and CCA numbers. When possible RC of 120 and over are the best. Most of these batteries have CCA in excess of 750. It has been reported that there are only about 4 mfr. of batteries and numerous labels on them.

I have an Optima Yellow Top waiting to go into my 2001 vert. I have been very happy with them in other vehicles.

Walmart, under $100. You don't need to spend big bucks to turn over a stock 350.

DO NOT buy another DieHard. I used to be 1000% loyal to Sears DieHard since the early 90s, but my last few purchases from them have been NOTHING but letdowns. ALL of their batteries have only a 3 year warranty at maximum now. Not 7 years/pro-rated like the days of past. Their quality (whoever makes their crap now) has just gone to crap.
Never, ever again.

All of my future battery purchases are going to be through my local Napa. They have 7 year warranties/pro-rating on their high end stuff. It's right down the street, and they know and care about their customers. I have a Napa battery in my 2000 C5 now which has a constant draw on it due to my alarm system with cell phone connectivity. I replaced my Sears DieHard Platinum that did not last 2 years.

Just to throw a fly in the ointment - My 3 yr. old Walmart battery is still working fine and I can buy three of those for what you paid for your Optimas, and they will last probably just as long as those. Sometimes I don't drive the car for 2 weeks or more, never have it on a charger, it never fails to start and all the electronics work as they are supposed to. Are you paying all that money for something vastly superior or just buying hype? Is a "Corvette" battery superior than that for any other Chevy or Ford or any other mortal car?

I agree about Sears batteries. I had one go bad on my dd and they closed the auto department in our local store. The closest Sears Auto happens to be 250 miles from me. They had me till out a form two months ago and I still haven't heard from them. Sears used to be a good place for tools and auto, but I am done with them now.

I bought the Optima because I had a couple before that served me well in other cars. Wife and daughter leaving lights or accessories on and the reserve capacity kept them alive. I don't know if I am really paying to much, but I am happy with the performance and price. I have been stranded by cheap batteries in the past, so maybe I am overpaying but have peace of mind. Maybe that's an illusion.

It all depends. If you are getting a Walmart AGM battery at a 1/3 of the price, heck yes. But I'm thinking you are getting a regular old lead cell battery. If you want to risk toasting the car's computer (which is under battery) if you get a leak, that's your choice. Personally, I'm not taking that chance so I go with a yellow top Optima battery in my C5. It also has a few added power drainers,

I have the AutoCraft Platinum AGM Battery from Advance Auto. It listed for around $179, I paid around $125 after 30% off with their online coupon. Do a search for Advance Auto discount codes.
The CCA says 925 and RC is 115.

Bought an Autozone battery still running strong through all this cold weather we have had. Was only 110.00. I have been told the new battery do not leak anymore so no worries about that. If you are pariond you can buy a battery mat maybe 10.00 to add protection.

Got this from another link.

Let me clear something up for you guys. Optima = Johnson Controls. DieHard = Johnson Controls Delco = Johnson Controls All 3 are made by the same company including Wal-Mart Maxx series. buy the one offering the best warranty to price ratio.

I have to go with the Odyssey, also. I replace factory batteries in all of my vehicles right away with the Odyssey and give the OEM batteries to my neighbor. They don't leak, they don't corrode terminals, and I have not had one die yet, although I am about to replace the 8 year old Odyssey in my vette just as a precaution.

FWIW, the Sears DieHard Platinum AGM that the OP is seeking to replace, was never manufactured by Johnson Controls. They were manufactured for Sears in Missouri by Enersys, the company that owns and manufactures Odyssey batteries.

Odyssey and Northstar are the two premium AGM battery manufacturers in the U.S., neither of which are owned by JC.

Just because all of these battery BRANDS are all made by 2 suppliers/manufacturers or so; does NOT mean that all products are created equal.
They all have a mix of different components which have different qualities; namely metals and alloy formulas.

One of those manufacturers is actually MY customer in my professional life. I do have some insight.

I have a DieHard Platinum that is in it's 9th year. Always keep it on the tender. Attended a seminar at Funfest by GM's world class tech. and he recommended getting a battery with the best Reserve Capacity. At the time the Platinum was the best I found. Still using it. Found the same infor. that Lone"Star has. Will probably go ahead and get the NorthStar AGM, 4 yr. full waranty, Approx. $303.00.
