Instead of looking for empty spots far away, look for other nice sporty cars, these people are concious of the damage the doors do and won't risk chipping the paint off of their own door's edges.
I do this all the time and frequently find the other driver hanging around to bull **** with you about cars. They like to show off their own wheels to anyone who will listen. I like to find the spots next to the handicap spots, there is always a painted buffer that I can put my wheels on the painted stripe to allow a lot of space on the right side so that another car can open the door all the way and not hit mine. And there is more than enough space for the people who need it on the left.
My 98 has been on the road more than 20 years now, and has quite a few nicks that I have touched up. Some polishing with a buffer makes them almost invisible from any distance. I wish the paint was perfect, but you can't drive it and not get battle scars.

Maybe he just wanted to protect one side of your nice car from a shopping cart encounter!

Nice move, using the light pole as a blocker.

Doesn’t look like the light pole was anywhere near the car.

You are right. The light pole is at the end of the next row, about twice as far away as the car...

That's where I would have parked.

I’ve been guilty of that.

Do what you want but I would not dare park like that. It’s asking for trouble. Someone would park a pos right in the middle in the south....
Or worse vandalize your car and leave

You’re right, that it could happen but I failed to say I just parked next to them as I was leaving the Safeway parking lot to take the picture.
