Really? The "Zip Tie" and "Flip Tie" mods were pretty popular on here. The ZT mod is basically just removing the top lid of the box and fastening the frame back down with some industrial sized zip ties. The FT mod involves cutting the plastic shroud and inverting the airbox so that air is pulled from outside instead of the engine bay. I didn't feel like cutting any of the plastic up, so instead I spent $3 at Home Depot for a bag of the big zip ties.
How does water not get in there when driving in the rain?
I have that foam on the bottom of the hood as well and it keeps water out. We get some pretty torrential downpours here in TX and the first few times I was paranoid and I'd check the filter afterwards. Dry every time. Some people sell foam kits to do the same thing if they have a K&N or Blackwing or other open element filter.
Since there is no compression with any CAI, or modified air box, there is no increase in intake volume, the engine draws what air it need that is available. the only thing a CAI does is offer cooler air. But not any more air volume.. there is no such thing as ram air without having a compressor to compress the available air. Since atmospheric air is at the mercy of mother nature, the only way to get more air is to compress it with a SC.
If you are speaking strictly from a Corvette standpoint and from what is available from the aftermarket, then you are correct. However, I spent enough time with a Bonneville team to know that you can, in fact, create positive pressure in an air box with strategic placement of the air inlet.
Now are there any Corvette "CAI" systems that would function this way? No.
I would be interested in seeing the results of using one of the aftermarket C7Carbon front splitters and turned it into a front-breather and use an air box that is sealed to the shroud...I think you would probably see a gain with that, at speed.
That flip tie mod is pretty impressive, props to whoever came up that and put the PDF together. I bet that does better than you think for essentially free even against something like the Vararam. I bet it would beat any of the filters that just sit in the bay like blackwing. Another plus is it keeps your factory filter options open if you want to keep a paper filter.
I have the Calloway Honker on my '03 and couldn't be happier. Looks like it's factory and brings in true cold air (which in Florida, usually isn't saying much... ) Most people don't go with it because of cost. But, if you look at what the car and other things for it cost, it's a mere drop in the bucket.
I shopped all of them...the engineering that went into designing the Honker, the fact that it looks OEM and the quality of the part is what sold me. True - not the least expensive option, but it was well worth the $ IMO.

Question because I truly dont know, what engineering went into that? Seems very similar to the flip tie for 500 dollars. Id argue the fliptie looks more factory than calloway. If ziptie part was the issue your a few nutserts/bolts away from it almost being identical.
Edit: Looks like a much larger filter and very clean look after searching some other threads.Still think it looks more aftermarket than fliptie since OEM parts but Calloway looks way better.
