Yeah, I didn't clear mine. I used Carnuba wax. on it. Wow! The coarsest grit I used was 1000 grit, then 1500, and finally finished it off with 2000 grit, and all I used was a sanding block. Then I used McGuires medium cut, and finished it off with Mcguires fine cut.
Can I assume you only had the top clear layer fail? I'm assuming no crazing or spider webbing?
Water in a bucket with some dish washing liquid. After each grit of sandpaper in kept getting smoother & smoother. Until finally it was as smooth as glass, no pun intended. Then I started using the McGuires medium cut, and the shine started showing through. Then the fine cut, and then all I had to do was polish it. Here's another before and after of the finished product.
Here is a look at my cracks. This is after about 3 hours with the 400. I got them all out last night, but it was a exercise for sure.
I can't be sure. But I do know that a lot of people that had rattles in their roof had a tendency to adjust and tighten them. What could have lead to stress cracks. I never touched the adjustment in my roof. There are small rollers in the roof mount on top of the windshield that freeze up and don't move that i make sure are lubed. Again this is just my opinion on what I have heard and seen over the last 21 years of ownership.
Defimitely. I have checked the adjustment on mine in the past. It doesn't help that my seal are shot as well. I was looking again at the OP pictures he posted. Looks like that is just a clear coat issue. He should have no problems getting that back to clear.
Spent about 3-4 hours yesterday with 800 grit to get off the acrylic finish which is a real pita. Still have a way to go. I would recommend an electric sander to anyone wanting to tackle this job. I didn't think the finish would be this stubborn.
Looks like you're making good progress. I used an electric on mine in combination with blocking it. It made a big difference. Bite the bullet and put 600 on that portion remaining. It wont hurt anything.
Finished mine up yesterday. I am very pleased with the results. I used a medium cut compound to sand out the big stuff, but I didn't have any fine cut, so I ended up using some polish I had. It's an 8 out of 10 now. It's a thousands times better than what I started with.
Got mine almost there. Wound up renting a palm sander but actually found that a block was better to get off the acrylic with the better leverage. Still have a ways to go with a finer paper. Def a pita. I think if melrose dropped their price a bit they would get more customers. $600 + the shipping is too pricey. If it was around $400 I probably would have forgone the arm workout for the last 3 days straight. Haha.
That top is going to look great. My only advice, I probably should have sanded longer with the 1500 and 2000. I used the electrc first, then went by hand.
