The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
For the record - this is EXACTLY The reason I opted to put more money into modding my C5Z vs. "upgrading" to a C6Z or C7 Z06/GS - (IMHO the C6 or C7 ZR1 would be the only front engine vettes I'd consider an "upgrade" to what I have now @ this point) - fancy interior & edgy body lines aside, look underneath a C5 or C6 (which for all intents & purposes should now be known as the C5.5 since its the weakest example of "progress" to the platform one gen to the next) or C7 & they're all VERY similar. Rear drive, pushrod V8 out front, manual tranny, transverse leafs, AL A-arms/cradles etc. etc. - In terms of pure performance they all do the same tricks very similarly & once you bring mods into the picture C5-C7 are all extremely equal w/ each gen having their strong & weak points. Why on earth would I want to "start over" again w/ a newer version of the same platform wind up w/ a payment looking @ what I could get for my C5Z + what I put into it for the recent build I'd still have a payment on a new or CPO C7, & a C6Z I'd wind up w/ only a small loan but have to shell out $$$$ immediately whether to fix the heads OR if already done -start the mod craze up again w/ a new ride.
Instead after re-driving a stockish C6Z, a mew Z51 stingray, a barely used '18 Z06, an M2, an M3, a cayman S, a new Civic-R, CLK63, GTR, ZL1 camaro & SS 1LE, etc. I realized I already have a paid-for platform perfect creating the ultimate combo of muscle/sports/track/powerhouse beast of a car - & interiors/tech doesn't matter in that regard. A true upgrade would be a REAL departure from what is essentially a massaged version of the same car over the last few gens - the C8. I could see me getting into one not to displace my modded C5Z (nope - w/ the upgraded stereo/lights & all the power/badass stance pop-up lights lopey cam etc. its a rolling F**K YOU to the EV world lol - gonna be so cool in 10-20 years to still have a car like this) - but as a true GT car that can be a DD or track weapon if you choose. I also like the RC-F.....but w/ 2 vehicles in my stable & my wife having an SUV a 3rd car is gonna be a hard sell in a couple years or in the very least will cost me in jewelry & handbags for the wife lol
*For the record, I'll reiterate, after going back/forth for last 2 years on whether to mod or swap out the C5Z driving all different stuff the ONLY 2 outta them all that made me consider something else was the C6ZR1 - too much $$$ for a used ride, but worth every penny - you can immediately tell driving one back to back against a standard C5 or C6 car its just assembled tightly & w/ more care - you can almost tangibly feel it in the driving experience. The other car I really liked? The Civic-R - yeah I know, crazy, completely different - but a hoot to drive hard ALL the time w/o concern of getting yourself into big trouble, has 4 doors, maybe the best stickshift I've ever grabbed in a factory vehicle, I could buy outright brand new w/ warranty would be dirt cheap to maintain & would probably last a long *** time - just couldn't get over the exterior looks, the Honda badge, & the allure of a blown V8
Oh wait, you're talking about hillbilly drag racing in a straight line.
Corvettes are SPORTS CARS primarily, not drag racers. Go buy a Dodge if you only care about straight line performance.
Correct, but that fo sho aint what a Z06 is about - its a road course/track car that happens to also be a great drag strip car, GT, muscle car, & general sports car lol - but that mentality is exactly why back in the day a lesser powered NSX could be quicker around a track than something like a Viper....my guess is the handling/chassis of the C8 + the tech nannies & dual clutch auto make you feel like near invincible like your god damn mike schumacher on the track. Probably WAY easier to get to that higher performance potential in the 7/10th+ range in the C8 than ANY version/generation prior.
Let's not forget, this conversation is comparing apples to oranges. Some are referring to a heavily modified z06 vs a stock z51 c8. Prices are different, potential of a slightly modified c8, nevermind a c8 z06 type of edition will embarrass many cars.
That said, I haven't driven a c8 but certainly enjoy driving my c5. For me personally the additional cost of a c8 just isn't worth it to me for my purposes.
Enjoy what you drive, most any car can be made fast with the right amount of money. Lol
I understand the C8 capabilities, the drivers capabilities is questionable that's all I'm pointing out.
Still it's a bad a** car.
I'm familiar with Lingenfelter's, great company !! But I chose a new GM 6.2 L LS3 and purchased Nelson Racing Mirror Image Turbos.
What I'm really wondering is where's the other C8 Models ??
I'd love to see a C8R up close and personal.
