Q :In the United States of America, what car is associated with astronauts ?
A: The Corvette
(I know this is C5 specific but it is a Corvette after all.)
I was a kid at this time, but these guys were my hero's. Seeing this picture got me thinking to search what happened to those vettes:
Sad, they should have been preserved somehow. How cool would that be to find out one of these was your C3 though?
From Google: Unfortunately for Corvette collectors, the astronaut's Corvettes were turned in at the end of the one-year period and were sold to the general public.
Once assimilated into the general Corvette population, the astronaut's Vettes disappeared from public view

Question What year of Gen 5 Corvette offered the most exterior color options? This year also has the 2 lowest production number colors.
Answer 1998 is when things got really interesting as there were 12 different exterior colors available. Then, there were the two unobtanium colors; Navy Blue Metallic and Aztec Gold. Navy Blue was rare due to very late availability and would gain momentum in 1999 but in ’98 it was the rarest color, only appearing on 12 coupes and 2 convertibles. GM had high hopes for the fancy Aztec Gold paint but multiple production issues resulted in just 12 coupes and 3 convertibles being painted this color before it was canceled. 1998 10U Arctic White 3,346 11U Light Pewter Metallic 3,276 13U Sebring Silver Metallic 4,637 21U Radar Purple Metallic 1,163 23U Nassau Blue Metallic 1,098 28U Navy Blue Metallic 14 41U Black 6,597 53U Light Carmine Red Metallic 1,567 58U Aztec Gold 15 70U Torch Red 8,767 87U Fairway Green Metallic 223 95U Medium Purple Pearl Metallic 381
The C5 was developed with the Computer Aided Gear Selector (CAGS) which forced stick shift owners to shift from 1st to 4th under low load and low rpm scenarios in order to prevent the car from requiring a Gas Guzzler tax when sold by the dealer.
Not quite true. C4s had this feature, called "One to Four". Below is from the 1996 owners manual.
The C5 Corvette if the first to have it's frame Hydro-formed out of a 3mm thick steel tube. This process uses high pressure water to bend the steel tube into the correct shape without requiring welding. This process created frames so strong that they didn't even need to add extra bracing for the convertible.
At the C5 unveiling at the Detroit Auto Show, Dave Hill made a "substantial upgrade" announcement regarding the C5 was met by laughter then a round of applause... What was this upgrade?
The C5 Corvette was "certified" not to leak...
Another announcement that day was for the Golfers, the cargo area was designed to hold a Golf Club bag.
Ya know....it's been a VERY long time since I've posted anything to the C5 Forum, since I sold my 2003 Zcar in 2012 as I took delivery of my 2013, and now my C8. But this outstanding thread caught my eye, and I think it's a very good one. Without a doubt, the C5 advanced the Plastic Chevrolet into the "amazing" category.
The C5 generation is the last series of Corvettes with headlights that open and close. The 6th generation started the fixed, non moveable headlight assemblies.
This is somewhat correct, the headlights have been fixed in all C6 to current, but it was actually a return to a fixed position. 1953-1962 were all fixed headlights.
And 2000 is correct. I had them on my first Corvette which I bought at 21 instead of putting that money into a condo or a house!
I knew it was 2000 because I was looking at one I was considering buying last summer, that had them on it. He said the 2000 was the 1st year they had them. I did not want to look stupid by asking what they were so I did a quick search on my phone to find out.
