I'm 46 and just picked up my C5 Z06 back in August. Granted, this is my second Corvette with my first being a C7 Z06 when I was 40. To that end, I don't think I'd classify myself as the typical car enthusiast, let alone typical Corvette owner in general. I have zero intention of keeping this car stock as I am not one of those people who strangely believe that GM knew best about virtually any major component. I know that the bean counters and practicality will win over the engineers' desires for the car. Therefore, hardly anything will be left untouched. I'm lucky in some respects that I have supercar(s) money, but I like American cars; especially American cars that I can really dive in deep with.
The story of the C5 is one where the engineers actually did win over the bean counters at the time and delivered arguably one of the best V8s ever produced (All Corvettes Are Red). Hence the cars popularity, reliability, and capability to take heavy modifications.
Bought a 94 when I was 18 and now also have a 00. In my 30s. Great cars and not too difficult to work on and I enjoy the analog experience of the C5.

I can't be the oldest guy on the Forum, Jeeeeze. In my 80'S and drive it three to four times a week.
If it makes you feel better, the original owner of my 2003 sold it to me when he was 84. I was 58 at the time and 74 now. So my C5 has only ever had geezer owners.
I've owned a C3 and a C4. The C5 is much more reliable, and a better fit for a guy who wants to DIY but doesn't want to spend more time wrenching than driving. I don't race it or show it. Most of the work I've done on it are the upgrades to make it like the newer cars (bluetooth, cameras, GPS, headlights and C7 seats). For me, it's more fun doing that than buying something newer.
And it's definitely a keeper. It'll be mine until it starts to give me woes or I can't get in and out of it anymore.

Toward the end of 45 years loving speed machines and go-fast goodies, this is where I have found myself, Rich. I’m still a wee bit shy of aging out, so to speak, but the admiration for this particular GM offspring has always been ever in my thoughts. My youthful speed philanthropies will most likely culminate in doing with this machine what is quoted in your post. Well said, good sir!
67 yo here with 2 bad hips. Got a 98 c5 automatic last year. Have loved the 5s since i saw the mules being run. Have a 79 4spd for over 25 years. Love to drive it because of the 4 spd. The c5 auto is easy on the hips.
