Re: What do your feed your Corvette? *POLL* (theblackvette)
Mobil Super or Shell Ultra 94. And no additives :nonod:
And thebblackvette, keep on posting polls if that's what floats your boat. Some interest me, some don't. No big deal. If a moderator feels they don't belong in the Z06 forum, they can move them to Off-topic or C5 General, can't they?
Re: What do your feed your Corvette? *POLL* (1hotZ06)
I will continue to post polls now and then but want to try to respect those that don't like them so I will try to limit them and make sure they are interesting and relevant.
Unless I hear from a moderator concerning my polls, then I guess I am okay for continuing to put them up.
Re: What do your feed your Corvette? *POLL* (ZO6Les)
I use Chevron, as the Techron in their fuel rocks. Gas with high sulpher content (yellow gas) like Shell, Quick Trip and (I believe) Texaco play havoc with the fuel level sensor in these cars. If I run a few tanks of Shell the gas gauge gets very unstable - one tank of Chevron clears the problem.
:smash: Quick Trip does not refine or produce gas...the gas at Quick Trip could be anything from Murphy to Chevron. BTW, because of its additive package, Texaco is one of the best brands of gasoline in the world and was purchased by Chevron. If you ever read an analysis you would understand. Also, no gasoline, not even the cheapest crummiest pathetic gasoline will affect your gas gauge. Water, which could get into any gasoline, could affect your guage, but never just gasoline. As far as sulfur, I think you are mistaken. Just as there are standards relative to octaine ratings, there are standards for sulfur content. So,
Re: What do your feed your Corvette? *POLL* (ZO6Les)
BTW, almost all gasoline companies use dye in their gasoline. The color of the dye indicates the grade of fuel. In the U.S., only Amoco/BP premium does not use any dye in its gas. Some argue that the lack of dye will keep your fuel injectors cleaner.......but this has never been proven.

Next June I will be 60 years old. I don't ever let a few A_ _ holes determine what I am going to do. If you want to post polls, POST THEM! Do your thing man. There will always be those who disagree. Life is a bitch, then you die!
Re: What do your feed your Corvette? *POLL* (Zero00)
I can't speak to what additives different gas companies use, you seem more up to date in that area than I am. I was told by a GM Vette mechanic about sulphur being suspected as the cause, and that Chevron doesn't have the problem. Possibly Quick Trip and others that use el-cheapo additives cause enough of a problem with these sensors that the Techron addditive in the Chevron gas cleans out, even if the sulphur content is similar (I suspect the regulation you refer to is a range, not an absolute number - right)?
What l can tell you from personal experience is that this problem was driving me crazy until I switched to mostly Chevron, and I have had zero problems since then, with no reflash of the PCM or sender replacement.

This is a tough question for me, I've only have to Z for 2 months and I'm still running on the dealers gas. I don't know what they put in it.
Maybe I should drive it more???
Re: What do your feed your Corvette? *POLL* (ZO6Les)
I agree with you that Chevron gasoline (but only the premium) is a world class gasoline. Their Techron has been and continues to be one of the best additive packages in the world. Many gaslines, such as Amoco, Shell, and Texaco, use the exact same additive package for all grades of their gasoline. Chevron does not....its regular and mid-grade gasoline uses less of the Techron.....this information was provided to me by ChevronTexaco, of which I am a shareholder. In my experience, sometimes a car will react differently to certain brands of gasoline. Once I had a 1985 RX-7; it ran like garbage when I used Texaco. On a 1994 RX-7, it ran fine with Texaco but did not like Shell. I called Shell and they told me this does in deed happen, all the time and they cannot explain it other than it happens with all brands.....I guess it's like spinach........some people like it & others don't

:iagree: This is a known issue, and Chevrolet admits that the gas gauge failures are due to an "intolerance" of "excess" sulfur in some brand of fuels.. :smash:
Re: What do your feed your Corvette? *POLL* (Dan_the_C5_Man)
:smash: Sure.......blame the gasoline......it's not GM's fault....the gasoline is the problem. Does Mazda, Ford, VW, BMW, etc. have the same "gasoline problems"? I don't think so. Blaming someone or something else is the e-z way out. :smash: :smash: :smash:
Re: What do your feed your Corvette? *POLL* (Zero00)
Dude, I don't hear anyone blaming anyone. Facts are facts. GM will replace the sender, or you can run the Chevron gas (or a fuel cleaner) from time-to-time. Or live with it.
BTW, none of the cars you mention are perfect, neither is the C5.

Re: What do your feed your Corvette? *POLL* (theblackvette)
I hope the answer is that nobody would intentionally run 89 octane in these cars.
This motor has fairly high compression and as such requires the higher octane. Running 89 can (and will) cause detonation, which is very bad. In theory the knock sensor will detect detonation and pull timing (and reduce power) enough to prevent damage. Personally I wouldn't trust the sensor or the ECM on my motor.
All that said if you accidently put 89 octane in the car, and kept your fun pedal light you can probably drive with it OK, especially in the cool weather.
Les
Are there any drivers here that put less than 93 octane gas in their Z06? Does 93 octane really matter or can you safely use 89?
