Hello All. In the past week, I have started getting messages here and there about "remove key, wait 10 sec" on my 2000 vert/auto. I remove the key and wait, then put it back in and start it up... most times... Then, this morning I got the "Service Column Lock" message and the car died!!! I had the Column Lock Bulliten performed on my car a couple of years ago and this is the first time I have had the problem. Any one else see this? Any ideas on why it is happening? Any responses would be appreciated. I am going to wait until GM Customer Assistance line opens and call them as well. In the meantime, I am calling one of the local dealers and ask them.
Fortunately you have an A4 and the current recall service should take care of that. (I also have a 00 A4 and had the recall work done). Your dealer should also take care of any towing required.

The problem is that I also had the recall work done a couple of years ago!! I have called the dealer and they want to "get the car in and check it"... I explained everything to them and there is a possibility that a reflash of the programming in March may have just caught up with them... I have read other threads that some later cars include a new program to go with the new harness that the dealer installs...

Im going with the recall service...let GM pay for it for sure...
I just hate to hear anyone get stranded...
I don't think the work done a couple years ago is the same as what is being currently done under the recall.
Mine locked several months ago before I got the recall notice. The dealer took care of it but told me that was not the final GM resolution for A4s.
The recall for A4s disables the pin itself.
Jim, The work done in 01 was to disable the pin. The column doesn't lock anymore with the key removed. I just got off of the phone with the GM Assistance Line and they have started a case. I will be getting the car to the dealer for "diagnosis" and if it is related, they will cover the work. If it is something else, I am responsible for the repair minus whatever I can squeeze out of the GM Assistance Center... I will keep everyone updated on the progress.

I dunno. It could be your PCM still thinks the column is security locked and is cutting off your fuel. Seems like that would be why you're getting the DIC code and it's shutting off. I know when mine locked (in a public parking lot) the fuel cut off worked just fine
I think GM should still take care of it for you. Good luck and let us know what you find out.

Did you have a column lock bypass installed already before you took it in for the recall?
Quasar99, I have never had the Column Bypass installed. The dealer that did the recall did it without asking me before doing it... that was in 2001. As part of the recall, the steering wheel doesn't lock anymore when you remove the key... this is true on all automatics that have the recall performed on them. This problem just started and is a real PITA!! I will find out Monday what the problem is and who will be paying for the repair. We have a show this weekend or I would take it in today.

MYBLU71, the reason I asked was because, I too had the recall done by the dealer after specifically telling them not to do it because I had the CLB. After the recall I started getting the 'Pull Key Wait 10 Sec' on a regular basis and even got the 'Service Column Lock' message' even though I knew my CL was disabled. It appears that my problem was a result of the technician plugging the Harness K into my Column lock Bypass rather than into the Column Lock. I disconnected the Harness K from my Bypass and the message has not returned. I'd venture a guess that what you have is a bad relay in the Harness K that they installed during the recall.
This is the absolute worst feeling in the world...
If you have a manual get a CLB kit. If you have an auto, take it to your dealer and have the lock plate removed... But avoid this at all costs...It sucks!

You probably need to have the most current recall work done on your car. They put a plate in there that keeps the locking pin from engaging, thereby eliminating the column lock feature.
Quasar99, No problem. Thanks for everyones responses. I will have it in on Monday and then see what they tell me. I think the girl is just being a little bit fussy because we have a DSOM 05 vert on order and it should be in in Oct timeframe... She thinks that we aren't going to be showing her as much attention..
Well, typical dealer!!! Took the car in this morning. They can't find any codes in the computer and they can't get it to fail!!! I nearly came unglued and ripped them a new one... I knew I should have pulled the codes before I took it in! It did it again on me this past weekend!
I gave painfully clear details to the "tech" looking at the car and he told me "...there have been some flaky early BCM's and they will erase the codes and lose the VATS information and have to relearn them..."
Did they at least install the harness and complete the specified recall work for you?
The only reason I ask is that might at least narrow down the possible options on why it's throwing codes and shutting off fuel. Sometimes tech reps have to prove the obvious to themselves.

Why dont GM give the M6 guys that plate? I am thankful though I have the CLB.

Because with an A4, the transmission is locked in PARK, so the car can not be moved (if an actual theft is occuring). Since the M6 can be taken out of gear, the column needs to be locked.

I painfully learned this lesson this morning. $600 for a new MN6 column lock motor I asked if they could just remove the darn thing and they said no, it would still throw the codes and shut off the fuel pump. That's probably a lie too.
