Default Tire question

I need some advice on what tires to put on my ride. I am looking for good gripping tires as well as tires that run fairly quiet. I have heard some negatives about the run flats, but all opinions are appreciated.

First question is do you want to stick with runflats?

Toyo makes a tire called the Proxes T1-S, no run flat technology here, however, you will notice greater handling/traction at a fraction of the price of regular GY runflats. I have them and love them, www.onlinetires.com will give you about the best price. Not to mention the road noise is greatly deminished.

I am not concerned with run flat technology, or sticking with OE tires, but if there is a good enough reason to I may be. I want to know your opinions on what tire to use. In other words if "You were me, you would use xxxxx." I am looking for all opinions to help in my decision.

Thanks

Take a look at:

I really like these tires. Quiet and have great traction. You can get them from www.tirerack.com for about $620.00 delivered. Also Tirerack has a section to find an installer in you area.

Been real happy with my Kuhmo Ecsta's. "MX" if you want a summer tread or "ASX" for better tread wear in an all season tire.

Thanks, there doesnt seem to be a "hands down" favorite. I am in california where the weather is dry, and I don't drive in the rain anyway. Not having OE tires won't hurt the resale...??? (yea probably a dumb question)

Here's my recommendations, for what they are worth:

Non-Runflats: Either Michelin Pilot Sports or Goodyear GS-D3s.
Runflats: Firestone Firehawks.

GS-D3 Goodyear tires. Quiet, great traction, wet or dry. Just drove the Vette from TN to Tucson, and on the way back ran through some great two-lane mountain roads in NM and the tires stick like glue. The next day, on the interstate, I ran into some torrential rains in NM and Northern TX. No hydroplaning, and no problems.

These tires are incredibly good handling, dry and wet, will smooth out the harshness one gets used to when driving on runflats, AND are made right here in the USA - highly recommended!

Tires are a very personal kind of thing. I went through the same drill you are. Here's some stuff I learned that may help:

Run flat or not? Answer this and you eliminate a bunch of possibilities

Are you looking for good tires or good cheap tires. Again, this eliminates a bunch, too

Do you care about how soon you replace the tires you buy?

Remember that changing tires means spending money on mounting new tires which isn't cheap (around me, it's about $120 for four)

Here's one that made a big difference in my decision: one person suggested that buying tires that will last six or seven years really means that I'll be driving on hard, wasted tires for two or three years; he suggested that maybe buying cheaper tires and replacing them in three years would give me 'better' tires for 6 years than buying expensive tires and leaving them on until every bit of tread was worn off.

Hope this helps,
Garibaldi

Tire Rack or Discount Tire....

I bought my Kumho MX's from Tire Rack. Great tire for the money and great service from tire Rack. Highly recommend both....

Default Best tire for the buck

Go with the Kumho Ecsta MX, great traction, quiet ride and you can't beat the price!
