Well I finally put in the Hurst, and I did a few mods on it to try to stop the rattle... I read everything on it and decided do the new Hurst shift boot mod:
found at http://www.z06vette.com./forums/show...threadid=47409
and I even wrapped most of the shifter shaft with Dynamat but it still rattles, even when it's not at WOT...
I noticed if I put a little pressure on the shaft and push it in the direction it's going (towards the radio when in 1st, 3rd, and 5th, and towards the console in 2nd, 4th, and 6th) the rattle disappears... almost like it's rattling again something...
What do you all think I can do...
I really think this sounds cheap and I need to get rid of it fast.. HELP!!

Try cutting a tennis ball in half, take a knife and make an X cut at the top, and then slide it down the shaft. With the tennis ball mod and my MOMO shift, I have no noise or rattle problems.
I removed all the stops from mine and have never heard a peep out of it. Maybe it is resting against the thorw adjusting stops (forward and backward) and vibrating.
Worth a look.. If it were my car, that would be where I'd look first.
If you are using the stops, be sure to Lock-Tite them in place.

ill be getting my hurst shifter for christmas, if i remember correctly the stops are useles on the C5...is that a correct statement. so if they are not used at all , removing them to get rid of a potentia rattle is the way ill be going....

Also, I got one of these pipe plugs in the plumbing section at Lowes and it quelled all noises once and for all. I had the tennis ball mod before that but this works better.
I used a bunch of teflon tape on the shifter threads where the **** goes on. Im talking layers of the stuff; enough where there is no rattle. Its the same stuff they use to prevent leaks on water pipes. It will absorb the notorious vibs that come from the MN6. and thats all i did, nothing else
Yes remove the stops too!
I have no rattle in mine

The stops are not 100% useless otherwise they would not put them on each shifter BUT unless you want to really fine tune your shifter and make the throws even shorter (but it will not be by much at all) then they are not needed.
I just took them out and never used them. My shifts are fine for me. A great improvement over the stock POS.
What has happened more than just once or twice to others on this forum is the stops worked themselves loose and thus made the throws even shorter. Shorter to the point where the forward adjuster kept the shifter from letting you even get the car into 1,3 & 5 and/or the rearward adjuster will work loose, turn in and keep you from shifting into 2,4 & 6.
I've read about it too many times just here on this forum in the past 3 years.
Yep, Glenn, happened to me. I think I was the first, in fact. I was headed to a dyno day and lost 1,3,5 and R 2 miles from the dyno. I borrowed a few tools from the tuner and fixed it in the parking lot. By fix, I mean I pulled the stops out altogether.
In reference to the teflon tape, I use that also, but mainly to keep my custom shift **** tight.
Ok let me get this right......I have the rattle sound just like the original post described. When I place a little tension towards 1,3,5 or 2,3,6 there's no noise at all.
So if I remove the stops my throws won't be to much effected. I'm assuming that they would change a bit but not to much.....right?
Oh and Patches what is that plumming piece you have and where do you install it? From the photo it does'nt appear to have a hole in it to slip over the shifter. Or do you place it somewhere eles.
Help please. Cause I get people in the car and they always say, "Hey what's that noise?" I'm sort of a brat when it comes to my car so it's sort of embarrasing.
Take a standard hockey puck and drill a 3/4" hole in the middle. This should fit snuggly down over the shaft. Slip it down the shaft as low as possible as long as it does not interfer with the boot and shifter movement. I used a small hose clamp around the shaft to hold the puck in place. The puck acts like a damper.
This helped to significantly reduce the rattle except for some left at WOT mainly in second gear.
Well I already wrapped teflon tape around the threads... Does someone have a pic of the stops... I'm gunna take them out and put some dynamat in the shift **** (but where?) Thanks guys for the responses...!
Some guys used to tape wheel weights to the shaft to try and damp the vibrations. I find that the rubber plug I put in does a much better job when combined with a heavier **** and the teflon tape on the threads to keep the **** tight.
Below you can see the stops in the gold base of the Hurst. They're the two setscrews with nuts on the left and right of the base.
These rattle and buzz problems are odd to me. I had an excellent mechanic install my Hurst shifter. He used no tape or tennis *****, etc.. He only used what came with the shifter and I have never heard a rattle or buzz whatsoever at any speed or rpm. Go figure!!
