Thanks!

Depends on the adhesive, but any of them should be ready to go in 24 hours.

VTC tile users, I have a new house and the garage floor has expansion joints (required by code in my area of Michigan). These expansion joint measure ½ inch wide by a ½ deep. Did you just lay the tile over these expansion joints?

Kevin, you need to seal your joints before laying the tiles otherwise they will eventually crack. Just get some concrete sealer and level it out in the cracks and you should be fine, also if you have any low spots anywhere you need to take care of them as well.

The Tile man
Tile Man, are the epoxy adhesives harder to spread and work with? If so can you give me an estimate of the extra time it might take? I realize that they would cost more, but most concerned about the extra time, energy and DIY competence needed, if I go that way.

i did mine in the morning early and had my car in it that night.

if you put the glue down and let it sit up for 30 or 45 min, then put the tiles down, they arent coming up.

I'm considering a VCT garage floor.

The floor would be exposed to salt and snow during the winter months consequently, from what I've learned here, an epoxy adhesive would be indicated.

My garage floor has a area speckled with a fair amount of latex paint since I use that area to paint trim, doors, etc.

Also, when I sweep the floor a fair amount of concrete dust comes up.
I can sweep all day and I'll continue to lift dust.

How will the latex paint effect epoxy adhesion?

Can I powerwash the floors and apply epoxy adhesive given my floor description?

Do You remember what brand/make/type of adhesive you used?

Armstrong S-515 Is the best. Generac name for that type of adhesive is "clear thin spresd." Spread it out over as much as you want to tile that day, take a 30 to 60 min beer break, and start tiling. The stuff goes on looking creamy color, and when it is ready will turn clear. At that point it is very tacky, almost like contact adhesive. Once ready to tile, you have 12 to 24 ours to put the tile down. Be sure to follow the directions on the can, use the proper notched trowel, and LET IT TACK UP!!! If you don't, it will bleed through the joints for a very ling time.

The epoxies aren't harder to spread, just a different technique to use it. Tthe tiles are set in the epoxy as you spread it, and you work from off the tile. Epoxy has no initial grab, and the tile can slide around a bit, if you aren't careful. The room has to be warm, 70* ish, or it will take much longer for the epoxy to harden. Its a chemical reaction that requires heat that the glue generates. Be sure to clean up glue smears or spots before moving on. Epoxy is a b**ch to get off later.
Epoxy will also cost alot more.

**Paint speckles won't hurt anything, although I would still hit them with a sander to make sure they aren't loose.

Also, when I sweep the floor a fair amount of concrete dust comes up.
I can sweep all day and I'll continue to lift dust.

**Dust needs to be removed. Power washer should do a good job of it. If you don't remove the dust, you are just sticking the tile to a layer of dust. It will stick, but not as good as to a clean floor.

How will the latex paint effect epoxy adhesion?

**not at all.

**yes

A white powdery substance forms on my garage floor.

Is that indicative of moisture "seeping" thru to the surface?

If so, is there an effective sealant that will prevent it or does that shoot the VCT idea all to hell?

Using the standard adhesives with the VCT will allow water to get under it, but there are some epoxy adhesives that will withstand the water, even the freezing. The sealer can be removed with chemicals or sanding.

I was referring to moisture seeping UP through the concrete pad rather than moisture seeping underneath the tile from the surface.

Was previously thinking of RaceDeck in 4 colors but the cost slowed me down a bit. Like the idea of the VCT, but the floor is old, has numerous stains (mostly oil based), and a few long, though not wide settlement cracks. This might prevent a successful VCT project
