It seems most people feel oil changes should be at 8000 miles.
It also seems many people want to know when to change the filter if they are not changing the oil until 8000 miles.
I think it makes no sense to change a filter at 4000 miles. I use a Mobil 1 filter and I plan on changing oil and filter at 7000-8000 miles.
the Mobil 1 filter cost me $11, the Mobil 1 oil I got as a buy one get one free at Pep Boys.
Sure I could buy a GM filter or any other filter and change it at 4000, but I could also be out driving. I love my car but I would rather drive than putter around mechanically.
I had trouble with the Mobil-1 filter, it was too restrictive and I was getting a startup tick and it was recommended by Terry Dyson that I should change to another filter. The oil filter study placed many filters better than the Mobil-1 and the UPF-44 as a combined filtering vs. flow. Amsoil was one of the top filters for good overall filtering and flow. K&N sacrificed some on filtering for even better flow. I am now using a Baldwin (it did well combined filtering and flow) and have not had a startup tick since changing filter brands.
