I have a 99 coupe. I would like to upgrade my exhaust with something that is not to loud. I was thinking of using Z06 exhaust mufflers. I called the GM dealer and, of course they did not know what I was talking about and said that they only had one listing for corvette mufflers. Does anyone know what I should be ordering or can anyone suggest a good muffler that is not to loud on the highway.
I personally wouldnt buy the exhaust from a dealership. The Titanium ZO6 exhaust is a popular option for people who want a mor mellow exhaust sound, but there are many others as well. I have the magnaflows, which is also quite mellow, no resonsance at cruise, great throaty and deep sound on acceleration. They are also beautiful stainless steel, real nice quality.
You should first try contacting Fred Beans. He is a supporting vendor and was selling parts at 5% above dealer cost the last time I heard. Here is the website. Private message "Gene@FredBeans" for a price quote. You also want to check out gmpartsdirect.com. http://fbchevy.fredbeans.com/index.asp
You'll get as many opinions as you will replies; common name brands are Corsa, Borla, GHL, Magnaflow, B & B..use the search feature of the forums and search for any, all of those terms and you'll find a plethora of suggestions/endorsements. The Z06 (titanium) cat-back (like most systems mentioned above are, that is, cat-back) are a favorite. You can often get a set cheaper in the C5 Parts For Sale forum here; i gotta believe dealer proce on this item would be outrageous. Best to go to local Corvette gathering and listen in person to a bunch of different ones, taking into account other mods like headers, heads, cam, x-pipe...it's a tough choice. For what it's worth we went with GHL Bullets; nice, throaty sound, quiet at freeway cruise, nice roar at WOT. But, as I said, everybody is different in what they're looking for. Good luck...
Used Z06 Ti's sound like a good option. I too have Magnaflow's and like them for both street and track, quiet around town and loud enough at WOT that they get my attention before hitting the rev limiter. Then again the wife heard Ken Fichtner's dad's car with Corsa Indy's and she went that route. On a couple occasions I've been asked if mine is running when parked next to hers, might not be what you are looking for, wouldn't work for me either, too loud at Laguna I'm sure.

I have the Z06 Ti's and like the sound, added throughput and the reduced weight. Don't buy them new - folks are taking them off all the time to get other exhausts and you should be able to get a used set for around $400-500. I wouldn't be surprised if they are close to $1500-2000 new.
I up-graded my 98 mn6 Coupe to Ti mufflers that I got out of the C5 parts for sale forum! It made a bid difference in sound quality! Very nice up grade. By the way.... Ti's weigh 13.3 pounds each,,,,,,,,,, stock mufflers weigh 25 lbs each.
Thanks for the great feedback. This will be an insurance claim so I will probably have to buy something new. When I said to loud, I meant in a resonating Honda Civic with a 6" dia. exhaust tip type of sound.

I am saving mine for when Z06's are collectable and people are scrounging for the original exhausts(G.M. part #). It is bound to happen. -Bob

Probably the reason they said "they only had one listing for corvette mufflers" is because your car is a '99. The C5 Z06 was not introduced until the 2001 model year. Ask them to price out a 2004 Z06 titanium exhaust.
