Default Check engine light....Help please!

I was driving home from work on the highway at about 65 mph and the check engine light came on so I checked the odometer and it read 45,725 miles. I thoght maybe it was for some routine maintenance so I checked the mileage. I checked allfluids and all was ok except that I was a little low on power steering fluid so I put some in and the light is still on. I never really thought that would be it, nor did I think there would be any sensor to show low power steering fluid level.

Any ideas?

Thanks for any info.

Use the dic to retrive codes. I saw on the forum a link to look up the meaning of the codes.

I guess it's time to pull out the ease scan program.

The next possible cause is the MAF or check anything that is tied up in your emissions.

Do a search on trouble codes, should be all sorts of info available on how to retrieve and interpret the codes.

I just called a good friend who is an excellent mechanic with a smog liscense and he owns his own shop, he informed me that it probably has something to do with smog. I hooked the ease scanner program and laptop. it showed up as a "Evap system small leak", so I cleared the DTCs. Could it have been the gas cap? I will drive for a bit and see it code comes up again.

Thanks to all the great member contributions! You guys are the best.
