Default Gutting Cats Code Error(s)? Help Needed Please.

Alright, soon I will be gutting my cats as I put on a new exhaust system instead of my old ti. A nyways, I have read about the error codes that come from gutting the cats & not installing 02 sensors. But my question is this: If I gut the cats & don't add the 02 sensors, will the codes that proceed have any negative effect on my car/car performance? Or will it simply just be code warnings and nothing more? Thanks a lot, yall rock .

WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO GUT THE CATS???????? Your only going to pick up a few HP!! If your interested in preformance, get a set of LT headers, high flow cats and a good X pipe!!

The CATs will act as an expansion chamber and you will loose some exhaust gas velosity! NOT good for ading HP.

Default Yeah...

Well, I am fully aware of all that, but was wanting to do it moreover for sound. Eventually, I will get a set of LG's, but not now. I'm buisy spending my money modding in other areas right now. I don't care so much about HP gains w/ such a mod. Just wanting to increase the sound level even more .

I hope that you're ready for the stench that will be coming out of your car once you remove the cats. Go down to your local army surplus store and buy yourself a gas mask. On top of the smell, you're going to kill some of the performance. All I can say is, you're going in the wrong direction. Good Luck.

Whoa guys, I don't think yall are getting it . I know what I want & I know what I'm doing. I know about the stinch & I know about performance gains/losses. I have looked at dynos from the cats being gutted & have heard gutted cats in person. So, like I said, I know . But what I don't know is if the errors that will follow will have any negative effects . Now, with that said, can anyone answer my question please? B/c this is my car, & it may be the wrong direction for your car, but not mine. It it something that could possibly bring a smile to my face, so that's a step in the right direction, in my book . I know yall are just trying to look out for me & inform me & I thank you, but what I'm really looking for is the answer to my question. BTW, I always drastically research any mod. before-hand, before I perform it on my car. I understand the pro's/con's . Thanks though.

They didn't even come close to answering your question. Sorry, but I can't do much to help either... I don't know the answer.

Can I offer a suggestion? If you are going to gut your cats, can you get hold of a welder? It might be easier to cut the cats out and weld some 2 1/2" stainless pipe to fill in the blank. Another alernative would be to give Stainless Works a call and see if they can make you up 2 straight pipes that could fit over the cut out cats and you could clamp them on. Probably wouldn't cost more than $50.
If you are doing this no matter what you are going to have to take the exhaust out anyway to gut them and you will need some pretty long and stiff wire to break them up. They are a real PITA to clean because there is sooo much stuff in there and it's reall hard to get to the stuff in the corners. Then once you break it up it seems like the stuff just never stops coming out. So you might want to run open pipes for a while so you don't clog your exhaust. That would be cool.
There are several codes that will trigger, mostly from the rear O2's, but there are a few that will trigger from the front. What will happen is after a while you will get enough that the car probably will go into Reduced Power Mode and that wouldn't be cool. I just saw that Corvette Garage has O2 sims for $99 a pair. If you buy them now you won't have to by them after you install LG's without cats.
Lastly, do you know anyone with HPTuners for your year car. You could maybe work something out with them and they could turn those codes off, and you wouldn't have to worry about sims at all.

Was in a hurry that last post... I'm at work. Anyways, thanks ArKay, that's exactily the type of answer I was looking for. Yeah, I definently don't want to go into "reduced power mode" . I guess it's time to do some welding soon.

If you want to be cheap, plug your o2 sensors in, wrap some tin foil around them, zip tie the tin foil, and zip tie the sensors up away from anything that can yank them down. your CEL (Check engine light) will go away.

If you gut your cats you will need to replace the rear O2 sensors with sims.

Sweet, thanks for all the advice. Can't wait till I get my new exhaust system in, so I can start playing w/ the cats... one way or another.

RonJ: , I gotta kick out of your post. Confidence? Maybe. I believe that there are just some things that ppl want naturally. It just comes w/ individual personality types, but I'm sure you already know this. Confidence of youth? Nah, not in this case. I just do the research & decide what I want & how it should be done given the situation/circumstances; Just like all you older guys. Simply put: Confidence through knowledge. But... don't get me wrong. After all, I will be gutting my cats. & installing SLP Loudmouths soon. Pretty bold huh? Now that is, infact, the confidence of youth! Then it's time for some longtube headers. <--- Dange, that's a lot of smileys.

"Older" guys "younger" guys, Blah Blah Blah

We, the rest of the world with common sense, no desire to placate you just so your car will sound "cool", while the rest of us choke and wheeze from your raw exhaust, disagree.

IMO, every poster coming to this forum advocating running these cars w/o cats should be summarily condemned. You want to turn the clock back to the sixties, move to China, you'll fit right in.

Do it right, get aftermarket cats (or weld in replacement OEM units) and adjust the volume on the cat-back end where it belongs.

Nothread...I just did a cats replace and didn't add the O2 sims for about a month and to answer your original question...The code is just a code to let you know, you loose nothing and gain a engine light. Enjoy "your" car and I do recommend the O2 sims...wish I would have know I could have gotten cheaper than MID-AMERICA, because they charged me $199 for my pair, so I am calling them MONDAY!

Thanks a lot mph, I really appreciate it. Will also keep that in mind.

Dan: Come on, stop being so politically correct, it's no fun . You don't want to worry about choking on my raw exhaust and such? Move. Or you could make me a time machine & I can go back to the sixties as you suggested. That would be sweet... Anyways, please go ahead & condemn me. It makes fighting it just that more fun. Anyways, are you suggesting I have no common sense since I want to gut my cats.? One normal volcanic eruption spits out so much pollutants into the air that it is nearly equivalent to smog pollution from every other source for a whole decade. I'm sorry for being %.000000000000000000000000etc.1 of the equation. Maybe I consult w/ my preacher about this.

We will merely agree to disagree. Agreed? (Note the irony)

No tree huggers here, bud. Yeah, yeah, I know, as long as you are the only one exhibiting bad behavior, 'tis o.k., no harm done.

Besides, if you get out of hand, it would be a lot easier for me to drop the dime on you to "the man", rather than move!

Just do me a favor, and shut your smog mobile off at stop lights when you have a motorcyclist pulled up behind. I'm sure they will appreciate the gesture!

Stop whining, aren't you old enough to not be doing that by now? If I offended you, I'm sorry. I came and posted this thread asking for genuine help. NOT for someone such as yourself to barge in on my thread & start complaining for me wanting to mod my car a certain way. You don't want problems? Don't start them. You attack & I'll fight back w/ my beliefs. I have not done anything out of character. I was thankful to everyone who posted & showed everyone respect. You, on the other hand, show me no respect. I only want help from those willing to help, not those who aren't willing to exhibit good forum manors towards others on here. Thanks & have a good day.

Who's whining? The only "childish" behavior going on in this post is "gutting out catalytic converters to make my exhaust louder".

You are getting the same "treatment" as a poster did a while back when he wanted to know how to "disconnect the speedometer because he was taking a really long trip and didn't want the miles to show up".

A lot of us on the CF are "law breakers". We speed, spin tires from stoplights, look at other men’s wives, whatever.

But if you don't think that posting on a subject as "volatile" as this wont receive attention from us "tree huggers", you need to grow thicker skin.

Yes, I admit it pissed me off, and I should have used a bit more tact; but as far as showing you "respect", it is you who seem to have little respect for your fellow air breathers.

I'm done now.
