Ok, I recently had 3.90 gears and a clutch with resurfaced flywheel installed. Since I have picked up my car I have only started it about 5-6 times or so. I have only had it back for a week, and I went away for the weekend, and I drive a company car to get to work. I noticed at first that it would make a clicking sound when starting but then start right up. However, on monday night, I went to start it, and it wouldnt start. I would push in the clutch, turn the key, and it would make a clicking noise and thats it. It would make the clicking noise once, each time I turned the key. I had to roll the car down the driveway to get it ready to try to jump. However, when I finally got the cables out, and rolled it down, ect. I tried one last time and it fired up. So I went for my cruise and came back. Then last night, I decided I wanted to go out for a cruise again, to try to break in the clutch, and the same thing. It wouldnt start. Just the clicking noise. I hooked up the jumper cables, and its not the battery. I talked to a mechanic, and he said most likely its the starter. Since my car was now at the base of my driveway, I couldnt push it up, so he said just keep trying and it should eventually work, and try to rock it back and forth. It finally worked after a while. I went for my cruise and came home and parked it.
My question is, is it indeed the starter, and since I have never had a problem before the clutch install, could this have caused it? How big of a job is it to change the starter? Should I expect the shop who did the clutch install to take care of this? Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
The first thing I would do is check the battery connections. One may not have been tightened sufficiently. Another possibility is the battery. I've had experiences where the shop accidentally left a door ajar or the ignition switch in the "on" position for too long, resulting in a drained battery.
Still, I'll bet it's an intermitant connection. If your starter is 8 years old then it is possible that it is failing, so check that out after ensuring the battery/alternator connections are okay.
