Default Notchy shifting?

Saw this over on the other board:

http://www.z06vette.com/forums/showt...etent+shimming

Hope it's not a dupe (I did search).

Anyone here tried it?

Wow. Only one member finds this interesting?

I'm definitely going to try it.

BowTie, please post your findings!

I'm going with the .50 washer.

I consider myself fairly mechanically inclined but what in the world are we talking about here???

I have a six speed with a Hurst and yes it is notchy and a little on the stiff side to shift.

What are we adjusting here?

It's about adding a washer to the bolt that secures the shifter detent and preload spring. By shimming it out, you reduce the effort and the "notch" felt when moving the shift lever forward and back. It does not affect side to side movement, since this is controlled by the springs in the shifter itself.

I stopped by Pep Boys auto parts last night on the way home from the office and bought the copper drain plug washer your talking about .70 thou thick, two came in the small package and cost a whopping $3.00. With two in a pack If thats to much you and a Corvette buddy can split the cost.
I will install it this weekend

I believe it is to prevent popping out of gear.

I did this yesterday. Much improved!

There is more info at Z06vette.com, but they appear to be down since yesterday...

I did it too. Ovearll it's a nice improvement/enhancement for my car. The job itself is very straight forward and easy to do. As for feel, I have the Hurst shifter in my Z06 and while gear engagement into the selected gear is still notchy the movement/transition between gears is not and in fact is quite smooth.

Here's what the OEM bolt looks like...

Here is the replacement bolt from Antivenom...

It's on the upper passenger side of the tranny. Easy to find, hard to miss.

Hey Guy's, installed my $3.00 Pep Boy's Copper oil pan plug washer in my 04Z the other night after work but didn't have a chance to take it out until this morning, and then I took it out for some real spritted driving and quick shift action, I have had a Hurst shifter installed for over a year as well as running Royal Purple Synco - Max trans fluid.

This has to be one of the best mods you can do for shifting sake, I can't believe how much smoother it shifts and the notchiness is all most no existant.

Those guys on the forum who sent their $50 or $60 bucks to Anti -Venom for the washers he makes should not feel like they have been ripped off, I would have glady paid $100 dollars for this mod and never looked back.

All I have to say is THANK YOU Anti - Venom for the information.

Looks like they completely eliminate the detent.

It's just a bolt, right?

And here I wasted a good 20 minutes deciding which thickness of washer to go with...

I would reccomend using at least 3/16" thick washer to duplicate what the bolt is doing.

This has got to be the greatest thing since the ziptie mod

Kudos to AntiVenom

Do you have a part# or a detailed description of the part since zo6vetee.com is down

Kudos for charging people $60 for a bolt, come on but wait its a billeted bolt

Let us know in about 6 months with this mod if the timing change does not have ill effects on syncro or other internal trannie parts.

No one has answered why the detent was in the MN6 design in the 1st place and long term effects without one.
I think the 20 cent washer would be better since there would be a bit of preload in detent

Kudos for the idea.

I paid $0.68 to find out

Time will tell.

It's got to be to prevent popping out of gear.

I added two washers I purchased at Ace Hardware.
3/4" hole and 1 1/2" OD. I'm not sure how thick they are.
They were installed today. I found that the shifting is
way smoother and less of a chore up shifting and down shifting.
I have a Ripper installed on my 02 6spd.
I was out in it for several hours tonight and thought this is a worth while mod.

I just got my Vette back from the shop last Thursday and now 1st gear pops out into neutral every now and again. It only pops out when I'm at a stop waiting to go and let off the clutch while in first, but only some times. Do you guys think this mod will eliminate that problem or does this sound like a bigger problem? I have the hurst shifter and was going to put my stock shifter back in to see if that would help.

I was thinking that the shop might have put the shifter back in and it's aligned a bit off so it's poping out of 1st. I very frustrated with this.
