I am very interested in this.....I may in the future work on a conversion. I think it will require some cuastom made parts...bellhousing...cut the old one off and have the surface machined to accept the smaller 4L60 cover. Also needs a custom tail shaft and housing...
I have been thinking about it......just trying to get the car together first...
The 4L80E is a truck tranny. If your going to these lenths, why not wait till the the new 6 speed comes out for the 06 Z06?
From what I have heard the 6L60E is not a drop in for a C5. A fair amount of fab work is going to need to be done. Plus the 6L60E is going to share a large number of internal 4L60E pieces, thus making it a POS. The 4L80E requires little work for it to support 1000 rwhp.
I guess my point was that it would be about the same amount of work for each, and dimensionally, the 6L would probably be a better fit. (I had no intention of implying it was a direct fit for a C5)
The new 6 speeds are being made such that they share the same case and then there are upgrades to reach the higher load rating. Basically the bell housing and main case (and internals) are essentially the same, and then they install an upgraded output shaft, torque converter etc... Its the latest plan to reduce costs by sharing components as widely as possible. It doesn't share any components with the old 4L series transmissions. Its a fresh design and is also going to be made by Ford under license by GM.
Should open up a whole world of mods down the road
Answer to the orginal question is Yank was/is working on the retrofit of the 80.I know it was back burnered when they did the th400 conversion but thats all I heard since.
The other is the 6l90 is it will fit a hell of a lot easier that the 4l80 will and stock handle more than the 80.
Also, it is a lot different than the 4l series and has the potential to be made a monster quicker as there are NO BANDS!! Its all clutch based, and most aftermarket companies have a good handle on materials and steels. The option to machine/pack for disc's within the asm look very promising. I can say based on my trusty tape measurer that the 6l is the same length as the 4l60.

Great info on this and hope more to come as this is something I would consider in dumping my MN6 for
Over on www.fullsizechevy.com you can find some info about a 4l65e. Same outer case but slightly different, beefier internals. Might be something to look into. I had looked into it back when i had a yukon.
I was more interested in more of the 6 speed concept, which i don't think the l65 has. There's been a lot of talk of the 6l80's and 4l80's lately on other forums, but haven't seen much about them here.
The 6L80 is in production ramp-up at Ysilanti right now with the 6L90 not coming out until the 2007 M.Y. Most widespread use (other than Vette) will be for the SUV and truck fleet (starting in the 6.0 and up engined vehilces like Denali and Escalade). These transmissions are supposed to be universal to the rear-wheel drive fleet. They plan to just change some of the internals and the torque converters depending on the application. Should eventually make this a cheap retrofit. Especially since Ford will be making the same transmission under license from GM.
