Default Gears Question -AGAIN

I tried looking for an answer before posting, but couldn't find anything, even though I know it has been answered at least 475 times.

Why do I need to get a whole new differential as opposed to just a new gear set? I want to go with 4:10's, I have 3:42's now.

The cost difference is staggering.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated !!

You dont need a whole new diff if you have a 3.42, the rest of the parts are the interchangable. Just find someone that really knows how to do the gear swap.

Depending on the year the axle was made you may have to machine the housing for clearance of the gears, but you can use the existing housing. (at least was the case with 3.73's)

Default gears

You don't need to change whole rear assy' at all. I had 3:42s and went to 4:10s just by having a competent shop install them. same housing, no machine work. Do it, you'll never look back, except of course in the mirror seeing the competition behind ya! chuck

Great info guys. I was always under the impression that the whole diff would need to be swapped. This is absolutely wonderful news!!!

THANKS!!!

consider DTE for the ring & pinion swap. They have many years experience with the C5

Default Ring and pinion swap cost?

Does anyone know how much this costs compared to a whole new diff? Sounds like this may be the way to go for low mileage, low power applications like mine

Check DTE's web site.. Somewhere around $1100, I believe.

I got my 3.90 from DynoTech Engineering (DTE) for $1199. Had it installed by a local shop for $650 (it's a little more expensive in California). You'll also spend prox $100 in freight to ship it and to get your core back.
Man what a difference! It dropped my 10-60mph time by 9/10 secs. The C6 does 45-65mph in 3.4 (according to Consumer Reports). I did it in 2.75 secs. I also have the Vortex intake and B&B exhaust, but that's the only HP mod.
