Default Stupid question: Wheel hop?

New to the Corvette world...Just wondering if anyone else has bad wheel hop? I know the run flats are pretty hard, and traction control will make it do it as well.

When I turn the traction system off, the tires spin, but once it gets up to higher RPM, they start hopping.. This normal? I have bridgestone tires on the car now.

One other question, when the car is turned off ( I have a 6spd) does anyone elses car chatter a little?

Unfortunately, the wheel hop is very normal. Especially with run flats. It's also damaging to the torque tube components.

If your talking primarily tranny/drive train chatter on shut off, that too is just part of the beast.

Alright, just checking. I've drove an F-body for the past 4 years and hardly had any problems at all w/ wheel hop.

Thanks for the info!

wheel hop usually is caused by bringing the 6 speed out at over 2,000 RPM off the line, and droping the clutch real hard. Practice and it gets better. Try riding the clutch out a little even if you go above 2,000 RPM. The race can be won or lost off the line, with wheel hop you always loose and its hard on equipment.

As for your question about the noise, yes it is normal. Believe it or not. If you put the trans in netural and shut the engine off, you hear what is called the box of rocks! Its due to all of the splined shafts in the drive train and the straight cut gears in the trans. When the engine shuts off, the compression in each cylinder causes osccilations (slight back and forwards motion) on the flywheel at slow engine RPM's and makes the rattling sound.

If you dont want the noise to happen, just press in the clutch and then turn it off. No more noise!

I just figured that one out today!! It's good to know that its normal.

The wheel hop doesn't come from the low RPM's (or speed), its when i'm cursin and then stand on it is when it wheel hops. I don't stay in it when it starts. It maybe hops twice and I let out.. I don't feel like using the warranty although its there

you gotta give it more gas if you want a smokey peel out... try redlining it and then putting it in 1st

youll get the hop if its not that strong of a burnout... physics > corvettes light end...

I got my 98 in late 97 when dealers didnt know squat about C5 corvettes. I took it back for wheel hop! I had the service manager ride with me. I did a smokey burn out across the lot and got a small bit of hop. All he had to say was " I dont think GM will cover anything like that!) So your out of luck with the dealer! Like goonie stated, If your gona do a burn out, do a real good one!!! I've mastered it in my Z06!

Oh yea, ditch the run flats and get some good tires! That will take care of a lot of the issue but not all of it.

I started reading this thread and was thinking that I get wheel hop if I do a whimpy peel out... If you want to burn out or just spin the tires, you can get off the clutch real quick at like 3k rpm, its gotta be significantly higher... and it helps if you have active handling to put it in comp mode too.
And I'm not a big believer in that its the runflats that cause more wheel hop--I have non-runflats and its the same ish... attempts to spin tires at low rpm cause wheel hop...

Or, wait until your on snow or ice, or in the rain. Of course, the Goodyear M+S have virtually no wheel hop, especially on ice.

Out of the car wash, just after they applied tire shine, is also a good place to try.

Be very careful with wheelhop in the C5, this can very easily destroy your differential/trans by shearing the two in half!

If you think you're going to be seeing wheelhop, get a RPM or DTE brace to lock the two together!!! It could save you thousands!!!

The Goodyear GSD3s topped 9 or 10 other popular tires in Car & Driver's recent super-tire test. They will transform your C5 as you know it!

Default What wheel hop?

Change tires number one. After that, go with the rear brace from DTE. Do a search. I've got 500 going to the rear with hop so rare, I almost forgot people still get it. There is a 99% cure if you want it.
