Default Mast Air Flow Mod?

I was reading where you can cut the mesh out of the stock mass air flow sensor from more HP.... Can anyone confirm this?

Yes it can be done BUT, sometimes it causes the MAF to report inaccurate air flow readings to the PCM. The MAF is calibrated with the screen and the screen straightens the air flow out and allows the thermisters inside the maf to read most of the air.
It can be tuned (corrected) with tuning software but without tuning the MAF for the air flow without the screens, it could cause some driveability issues.

I did it on my 98 and never had an issue but there are others that have had issues. Depending on the state of OEM tune, if you are slightly rich and remove the screens and it causes it to lean out, you would see a performance gain. It the situation is the other way around, you could be running very lean and problems coud happen.

I ported the TB on my 02 Z06 (the MAF in a Z doesnt have screens) added a vararam and headers and the tuner said that my MAF calibration was all whacked out.

If your going to do other mods (headers, intake, ported TB, filter ect ect..) remove the screens then and get it right with a good tune.

Removing the screens wont give you earth shattering improvements! Maybe 3-5 HP if that.

The flow improvement doesn't give much gain and IF your car is not rich to start can lead to throwing codes even if you don't damage the fine filaments in the process...
BUT did it any way.
I bought a spare MAF from a forum member to use for descreeing and kept my original... in case there was a problem. That way if I screwed up, it didn't cost me the $350+ the stealership wanted and I wouldn't be stranded while looking for a replacement.

Not worth the risk, although a tuner said he could tune any problems out. Yep that how I want to get my next 2 horsepower, pay some tuner $4-500 to fix my messup. I'll pass on that!
