Called the dealership today, and here its 60 bucks for an oil change. I said, wow, why so high? He said because the Vette uses Mobil 1 Synthetic oil, ahhh. New vette owner here, hope im not in for a bunch of big suprises lol.
Yeh, your in for a lot of suprises
Mobil 1 @ Wal-Mart about $4.00 per quart= $26.00 plus oil filter another $4.00-$5.00 the rest is your time.
Or the other $30.00 is for the stealership, your choice
I raise the front of the car and put it on jackstands, then get under the car and start the oil draining, then I put my jack under the rear cradle and jack the back end higher to get all the oil out, I just leave it up on the jack, but don't get back under the car like that.
Tom I like your idea about running 1 qt through the car to get the rest out.
If you can reach it (long arms, little stomach) does anybody not use a lift or jacks? I realize it is a stretch but this would be the first car that I would have to jack up. I can easily reach the filter and can "just" reach the oil drain plug so plan to roll the rear tires up on a plank and use the natural incline of my driveway to accomplish this task.
to get the remaining slug oil out of the bottom of the oil pan i do two things:
1. jack the rear up just slightly more then the front, that gets a bit but not much more.
2. run a full quart of oil though the motor. Pour a new bottle into the oil fill with the drain plug out. WHen you see clear oil come out the bottom you good to go. Takes about 1/3 to 3/4 qt to get the remaining slug out.
Let it drain for a good 30 min. Then put in the drain plug, put 3/4 qt or about that into the oil filter, put on oil filter, fill with oil.
So are you waisting an extra quart of oil?? I say no, it helps clean out the old oil.
I change oil on a few vettes and trucks. My two trucsk and two vettes, the Golden Eagle track rat and my wifes stock vert. plus a few other guys here in the area.
I found the longer the car goes between oil changes or the harder it is run the more sludge is in the bottom.
My car takes 1/2 qt extra to clear out the sludge. - change every 500 miles/ two track weekends. lots of 2000rpm to red line driving. Oil cooler and accusump 10 1/2 qts total. Lots of sludge. 9-10 qts of 0-w40 oil / change depeding on what I can get out. Oil cooler and lines dont always drain.
my 1500HD tow vehical takes a full qt Oil change 3-3500 miles ofs of sludge 5-w30 - Think I will drop the change intervel to 2000 miles and see and start using the 5-w40 for SUVs and Trucks
Wifes vette, 1/3 qt change - 3-3500 miles not much sluge as we dont drive it hard. 5-w30
other vettes, 1/3 to 1/2 quart depending on the milage. Evens some of the vettes that are not driven above 2500 rpms but have 4-5000 miles the oil coming out does not look too good.
I have done lots of oil annalyses from two different companies and have recieved mixed results.
I think that driving style has more to do the oil change intervel then milage.
I also stick with AC Delco PF-46 oil filters. Lower oil pressure and when you change them ever 500 miles in one car plus three other veichals one goes though a case in 8 months.
