I am trying to bench check the wipe pattern on my Crane rockers. I can center the pattern on the valve, but the pattern seems to be overly wide at about 0.100" rather than the 0.060" I was trying to get. I can move the pattern in and out with respect to the intake side but can't seem to narrow it. Has anyone run into this, or is it characteristic of the Crane rocker action?
I don't see how you could affect the geometry of the rocker / valve tip interface, unless you shimed the rocker base. But then you'd have to adjust the PR again, and around you go.

The Cranes are stud mounted, so the rocker height is set by the pushrod length and adjustment of the locking nut. I am going to try and bring the pattern a little closer to the intake side tonight to see if it thins out a bit. This is what Vinci recommends. I am also having problems getting the pattern because I am using checking springs, which don't have much force on the roller tip. I have had to wet the roller with a little alcohol to get a wipe pattern and I think that may be smearing a wider swath, not sure though. At least I am doing this on the workbench instead of freezing outside with the car
Speaking as a fellow perfectionist (actually I think you have me topped a bit), I know you'll get it right. Let us know how the new heads / rockers work out.

RATS, didn't think it was that obvious.
I have got a real good centered wipe pattern now, about 0.070" wide so I am going to stop here. I have a measurement from the top of the adjusting nut to the stud which sets the wipe dead on, so now once I trial fit the head I should be able to quickly home in on the pushrod length and verify my PV.
