I realigned the front cover, installed the pulley and gave it a go only to have my hopes crushed. I then diassambled the upper end and found a cam lobe that have been beaten up by the lifter.
So it seems that a lifter is my problem and obviouslytook a dump due to camwalk.
Thanks for the help, you guys truly are gentlemen!
Why did the cam move? Did something come loose from you cam install? I'm not seeing how the cam's forward/backward motion takes out the lifter but I'm somewhat of a motor novice. Curioius.
Good luck with the Z06 and more importantly the Wife!!!
I was getting a code for a cam position sensor which usually points to loose cam bolts....The cam sprocket had come loose and obviously the cam had walked.
I am triggering the cam sensor code in my Z as well. I also hear a knocking / rattling sound coming from the front of the motor. It seams to be coming from the cam cover area. Did you have a similar sound before you started?
If your triggering the cam sensor code and have noise,, i would disassemble the cam cover and inspect the cam plate and fasteners! Thats usually the very first symptoms of a very serious problem!! Did you ever have any cam work done in the past??

The sound you are hereing is the three cam bolts hitting a little dimple on the inside of the front cover. You deff. need to remove the front cover and replace the timing set due to the bolt holes in the sproket being elonggated.
The motor has never been broken into. I do have an A&A procharger with other bolt ons, it just dyno'ed at 567 rwhp @LG. How intense of a process is taking off the front cover? Do you guys have any suggestions to make it easier? I do have a factory GM service manual but it does not walk you through the entire process from start to finish, just removing the cover. What else do you have to take off? Do I have to worry about any metal shavings getting into anything? What else should I look for while I've got it torn apart? I am not an idiot by any means but most of my internal engine experience is with older blocks so getting as much info up front would be helpfull.
I forgot to add that the rattling sound is not very consistant but rather seems to be ramdom. I also only hear it at idle, it seems to go away at rpm's.
do not, I repeat do not keep driving it that way. I have the same A&A kit on my car and if you need someone to help you get to the cam bolts let me know. I have done it multiple times. I had the same problem with my car. If that cam moves too much and the timing chain falls off you lose your motor. Not fun. Call me and I will either physically help you do it or walk you through on the phone. 817-975-9444. I live in Fort Worth so I should not be too far.
Start by removing the valve covers and inspecting the valve springs. As wacky as that sounds, just give it a look see. The cover is a PIA. The oil pan does not need to come off. W would also look to see if maybe you have loose balancer of something on the blower that is making noise. The cam sensor code is bad news though and that NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED!!
I replaced all of the pulleys and the tensioner on the supercharger last weekend so its not that. I used a stethescope to probe around and it definately sounds like its coming from the timing chain area. If it is the timing chain or the cam block off plate what are the chances that I've got metal shavings in the oil pan?
