Default Internal engine disaster....help/thoughts please!!

Hey everyone, long story short, cam only ZO6 with bolt-ons etc..I began getting the camshaft malfunction code so I replaced it only to find that it didnt cure the situation.

I then made the dreaded decision to remove the steering/front cover etc...Only to find that the cam sprocket was loose, so I removed it lock-tited the retainer plate/torqued it, then the sprocket and reassembled the engine nice and smooth. I start the car only to find that the code is gone but the car has developed a squeaky noise somewhat similiar to a belt but coming from somewhere in the engine. I removed both belts to see if it was a pulley/idler, but no luck.

So today I decide to disassemble once again to fix the problem which I thought would be coming from the front cover area, checked everything once again and retorqued/reassembled. Unfortunatley I had a problem with the pulley this time...it pulled in perfect as previous, but the bolts seemed to stick on my removal of install bolt. It seems to have stripped the last half inch of on the tip of the TTY GM bolt. I believe there "may" be some thread damage to the crank , but I'm going to try and chase/tap the thread to see if I can rethread the new bolt. I did start the car(quick install of the tb/airbridge)only to find the noise still apparent!

What could the noise be, and what is everyone's advice? I did have some 2nd party advice form a reputable Corvette shop tech, but he is stumped as well.

What is everone's thoughts on the crank thread situation?

My main reason for posting this is I figured someone may have experienced one or both of these problems in the past and could offer some insight.

Sorry for rambling and thanks in advance for the thoughts/direction.

Alan

I don't know about the squeak. As for the crank, you may be OK if it didn't mess up the threads too far in. Make yourself a tool similar to the one in this link http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show...ool&forum_id=1

The rod screws in a couple of inches, so the stress of pressing on the pulley is distributed across all the crank threads. Also, there is no rotating stress applied to the threads, so there's no chance of stripping.

I had the same problem with the code as you probably read some of my posts when you searched. I don't know what your squeak is, but it would probably help if you described it in a little more detail (does it do it really fast, slow, is it rhythmic, metal sounding, coming from one side or the other. Or you could just call me 817-975-9444, I am laid up from a motorcycle accident so I have my phone on me all the time. Maybe I can help you get it all fixed. Names Phillip.

Does the squeak happen immediately upon start up, or does it take a minute or two of running the engine before it starts? Just curious.

The noise is evident from startup. It seems to be coming from the front of the engine, and sounds similiar to a frozen bearing squeak/squeal......

Possibly the oil pump? Lifter? Who knows.....

TIA you guys!

Could be the belts. I just changed to Goodyear Gatorback belts and the squeak is gone.

The belts were removed and the car was started, with the noise still there....

Thanks though.

Maybe the loose cam sprocket caused some wear on the timing chain and/or wear pattern on the sprocket which is causing the noise.

My guess would be "pulled crank pulley on too far, now rubbing on the front case cover". Is this even a remote possibility? Did you follow the instructions on how far to pull the pulley on?

Maybe something to do with the crank shaft seal? Did the pulley suddenly separate and now it's rubbing on the front cover? Really not much left. Good luck.

I installed the pulley as stated on the LS1Howto instructions. The pulley is still in one piece and on second removal I did not notice any signs of rubbing from the pulley.

Thanks guys!

Did you put the dampner on and align the timing cover before you torqued it down?? The dampner could be rubbing on the seal and making the noise.

when installing the timing cover it is mandatory to tighten the lower two bolts that run through the oil pan and up to the timing cover first they need to be snugged down before the rest or the crank seal will rub a groove into the pulley and then you will have an oil leak down the road....ask me how I know.

My own experience is that I have a high pitch screeching noise after removing the power steering pump. The occurance was drastically reduced after 15 minutes of driving, but still persists at 2500 rpm and up when the steering wheel is turned slightly; which is why I figure its the P.S. pump. I probably got air trapped in the system, but don't know of an easy way to get it out, so I'm hoping the problem will cure itself before destroying the P.S. pump.

Thanks everyone for the help. I'll try and align the front cover correctly and reistall everthing.

Hopefully this cures the issue as previously I did not install the pulley prior to torquing the front cover bolts.....

Good deal, that may indeed be the issue, and considering how inexpensive the crank seals are, and what a hassle they are to get to, I'd install a new one, just in case you've rubbed this one the wrong way.

Well I think I found the culprit.....

I realigned the front cover, installed the pulley and gave it a go only to have my hopes crushed. I then diassambled the upper end and found a cam lobe that have been beaten up by the lifter.

So it seems that a lifter is my problem and obviouslytook a dump due to camwalk.

Thanks for the help, you guys truly are gentlemen!
