MAF Cleaning
Is there a proper way to clean the wires and sensors in the MAF. I know they are very fragile and should not be touched.
Is it necessary to clean them? Mine look "dark" and I was wondering if that effects performance at all.
Thanks
Ed

Do not touch them or use any cleaner with a q-tip...
the best way to clean them is with electrical contact cleaner.
Just spray it on allow it to air dry.

I have also successfully used throttle body cleaner and brake cleaner.
Any aerosol solvent based cleaner that removes oil and grease and then evaporates will do the trick.
If you are going out to buy it, buy the electrical contact cleaner. If you have one of the others at home, save yourself the trip.

A clean MAF WIRE will return the A/F ratio to where it belongs. When it is coated it signals a lower air flow and the computer leans the mixture. It should be one of the first things you check if response is sluggish and you have over 40k miles

Is it OK to clean it while still on the car or must you remove it first?

Several years ago, "trich" use to be used alot. But I'm pretty sure it was later banned because it is a pretty heavy duty carcinogen.
