Plugs, Wires, PCV, air filter and all the fluids (brake, PS, engine, trans, rear and coolant)

60K on the clock and almost 7 years on the road. I would do all the above ifit has not been done already.

That is something I wondered about myself...I was told by several people that the only reason to change the plugs and wires under 100k is if you are bored. Supposedly the plugs and wires are good for 100k, and there is no benefit to changing them unless there is a marked problem....

Opinions?

Definitely agree about everything else though....nice fresh fluids always make a car happy!

If you leave the plugs in the block for a very long time, you run the chance of them fusing to the block. At 60k, I am willing to bet the electroide on the spark plug's tip is mostly gone. I fresh set will get you a much better idle and better combustion.

I Looked at a few of my plugs on the 98 at 75K. They looked like they could go another 25K easy.

My Tahoe got changed at 100K, the nissan at 100K, plugs looked fine.

Now I don't drive my cars hard nor tow anything and if a car is driven hard it would make a difference on plug life.

I remember the days when 10K it was time to change plugs and points. Cars these days are much easier on the plugs than they used to be.

I changed out my plugs at 100K and shouldn't have bothered. Car wasn't misfiring, running great, I just thought I needed to do it. Every plug had it's platinum pucks in place, gap was open only slightly.

As far as the plugs siezing in the heads, it's been 6 years; never mind the miles. If they're going to sieze, they've already done so.

Oh, and I'm still running the original wires.

Other than that, good info. Also, if it were me I'd get a good alignment done.

HTH, and have a good one,
Mike

99 6mm RED coupe 73000 miles. Changed plugs at 65000 miles to try out the new A/C Delco Iridium 41 - 985's. Wasted my time and $. All platimum pucks were attached to the original plugs and showed no wear. The new plug gap's were factory set at .040. I am the original owner and changed the fluids and fuel filter at 50000 miles. That's my 2 cts. Good Luck !

Aftermarket wires regardless of the make, model or color, will NOT add any power or torque to the C5 if the wires that you have are still in good condition!!!
The only reason to change or up-grade the wires would be for spark plug wire quality! There are some very good wires that use QUALITY materials and function better than others. I used magnacores and have good luck with them. The AC Delco red wires are probably the best wire for the money if yours go bad. (burn insulation, or start missing cause of cracks or internal wire opens) I would get those.

Plugs are not a bad idea, filters and fluids as well. I changed my plugs at almost 80k, my reasoning was that I had no idea of how the Vette was actually cared for, I suspect it had led a somewhat abused life before me. The plugs did not look bad, and it gave me some piece of mind knowing that there were no signs of bigger trouble. The new plugs did help, not a whole lot but noticeable.

I’m not sold on the idea of wires being needed. I would rather recommend a trans fluid flush and maybe the trans filter. But, go somewhere that knows what they are doing. I had mine flushed and a new filter, and now it doesn’t seem right. I’m still searching for a good mechanic

A brake fluid flush may also be a good idea, I bleed mine and the fluid looked good. Just gave me more peace of mind.

Most of this will just give your friend peace of mind, the plugs will last 100k easy.

I'm wondering what could go wrong with a flush and filter replacement that makes the car not feel right? I don't dispute it, because I feel the same way after having that service done on my 2000 C-5.

Just guessing; under-filled fluid level, cheap / wrong fluid? Is the valve body molested when changing the filter?
