i am doing a head/cam swap and while im at it i will be changing out the timing chain. is the ls2 timing chain a good choice and is there anything special i will need to do when swapping it out? also what is the part number?
Yes, the LS2 chain is a good, hassle-free inexpensive choice.
While you are in there, pull the oil pump off, remove the spring / valve assembly, clean the bore and the valve, shim the spring if you want a bit more pressure, re-assemble.
This is the equivalent of a new "upgraded" pump for zero dollars; these pumps don't fail, more likely to have the valve stick from misc. debris.
Nothing specail you need to do, in fact ithe original LS1/LS6 chains have been discontinued as this is now the GM replacement for all LSx engines. You can go to your local dealer and tell them you have an LS1...this is the chain you will get.
Been seeing a lot of problems with these single roller chains lately. I too went double roller. I really like the Crane chain, it has Rollmaster stamped on it so I assume that who makes it for crane.

That looks like mine did, oh I bet I used the same one, those AFR's look great on your motor
The LS2 chain is a safe bet and the dampener is even better but on a 98 you will likely have to drill and tap. I did both and it really is not a big deal. The LS2 damp is a different part# than LS1/6.
Phil, ask Arnold who's did he like better the one on his 04, Mikes, or mine as you know he has done enough of these, just like getting the heads that you are getting, he is the man and will not give you bum advice and be done with it
