Default High Engine Temps!

Today when doing some city driving, I noticed my eng temp getting up to 230. That did'bt bother me, but it seemed like the fans were'nt kicking in to bring the temp down like they normally do. When I got to the gym, I popped the hood and the fans WERE running but the temp was still hanging at about 226 to 230. Do the fans run and then kick up to a faster speed when the negine temp needs to be lowered? Cause if so, I think mine may not be doing just that. Are there some relays I should check for this type of problem?

Thanks so much!

Your high speed fans will kick on at 235 deg. and off at 226deg. if you have stock settings.

This is normal especially for the outside temps you are seeing in that part of the country.

The fans come on in 2 stages. The low speed fans come on at 219*F, and the high speed fan kicks in at 228*F. Here are the details.

Cooling fans come on based on the following inputs:
  • A/C system
  • ECT Sensor
  • Vehicle Speed Sensor

Low Speed Fan comes on when:
  • ECT is above 219*F, the fans come on.
  • AC head pressure is above 219 psi.
  • Engine spoeed is above 3500 RPM for 12 seconds and the oil tep is above 261*F.

Once the fans are on, they will turn off when the ECT temp drops ~11*F, or if the AC head pressure drops to 150 psi. The minimum on time is 50 seconds.

High speed Fan comes on when:
  • ECT is above 228*F, the fans come on.
  • AC head pressure is above 225 psi.

Once the fans are on, they will turn off when the ECT temp drops ~11*F, or if the AC head pressure drops to 180 psi. The minimum on time is 26 seconds.

Your engine temps at 230*F are still well within the normal range, but if the temps increased up to 240 then you should consider there's a problem. Also, check under the nose in front of the radiator to make sure there's nothing that got sucked in and restricting the airflow.

Get on the ground and look up into your radiator AC condensor. I bet there is all kinds of crap, grass and micky d bags up there. Pull all that chit out then take a high pressure air hose and blow the sand and dirt out.

Check fluid level. Fill past full mark. This will lower your temps.

My car had the same problem but would go from 220 to 240 back and forth, well the thermostat was the problem, think it only worked half of the time.. So u might want to check it

I am gonna check this cause I have'nt in a while. Though, once I start moving, the temps are normal and cool right down.

Thanks!

I've been getting some fairly high readings with the recent temperatures allmee. Have to say my fans have been working overtime though. It's a lot better when you climb the hill up into Summerlin

The cooling fan control parameters JC in XTC5 provided above are for earlier model year C5s, 1997 through 2000. allmee's profile shows he has a model year 2001 and the parameters are different for later model years.

For model years 2001 through 2004, the following is covered in the GM Service Manual in the Engine section, under Cooling System Description and Operation and all the details can be found therein:

Both fans operate together at the same time at either the low or high speed. The engine cooling fan system consists of the two electrical cooling fans and 3 fan relays. The relays are arranged in a series/parallel configuration that allows the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to operate both fans together at the low or high speed.

The low speed is commanded on when the coolant temperature reaches 226 degrees F. It is turned off when the coolant temperature lowers to 219 degrees F. The High speed is commanded on when the coolant temperature reaches 235 degrees F. It is turned off if the coolant temperature lowers to 226 degrees F. When the A/C is on and the coolant temperature reaches 185 degrees F, the low speed will be turned on when vehicle speeds are less than 35 mph.

Make sure you do this. My wife's Corvette had all kinds of stuff stuck in it. You have to look between the two radiators. Her front one was clean looking from the front view.

I dont think I will have a problem with blockage. When my ac is on & I am sitting at traffic lights, the fans are on high and the motor stays perfectly cool, like it should. But I am gonna check anyway!
