Default How warm does engine need to be?

How warm should I let my oil temp get before I start hammering on the throttle? I drive an 02 Z06, and a friend with an 01 Z06 said to never get on the throttle until oil temp is up to about 180. Thus far I never really push past half throttle or over 2,500 RPM until the oil temp gets past about 170.

Default temp.

When I used to drag race, Tim Richards said that we should not, get to crazy before 120, sow we used to do burnouts, just generaly screw aroud a little untill we had temp, but I think everyone has there own idea on this, can't hurt to let the engine up to temp. before you go nuts.

I've got a full H/C engine and I never take it over 2k until the oil temp is 150. Big spings for the cam are a lot stronger than stock but also more brittle than stock when cold. With stock springs you're probably OK as soon as oil is fully circulaled through the engine and pressure is up.

FWIW.....my '98 doesn't leave the garage until the OT passes 100deg, then I don't push hard until it's over 150deg. It runs like a top and uses no oil after 47K miles. I'm happy!!

I usually hold off on anything "frisky" until 170-200.

There will be many answers, my personal guidelines that I use are not over 1,500 RPM until 160. Over 160 but under 180, not over 2,000. After 180 then anything goes. I have PSI beehive springs that are quite stiff.

Thanks everybody, sounds like I am on the right path. I will continue to baby when cold, and keep my right foot planted when hot!!!

Here in Phoenix when you turn your ignition ON, the temp is 115. I usually hold off till oil temp is 150-160 which is just 2 - 4 minutes.

That's what I do. Gas is reasonably cheaper than repairs.

And I thought I was conservative.
I drive mine "normally" (up to about 3,000 RPM) until I get to 160 degrees oil temperature.

If I used that philosophy I don't think I'd move much!! I don't think with my G5X2 that the car runs much below 1500 RPM!

Actually, as long as I'm pulling, it's OK, but I can't cruise below 1500, thats for sure.

Hey, did you decide on the exhaust? Don't want to hijack.
